150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore

One of India's greatest sons, who will be remembered by every Indian through the National Anthem, 'Janaganamana adhinayaka jayahe .....' and who brought the Nobel Prize in Literature to our country was born on 7th May 1861. Thus this is the 150th birth anniversary of the great poet.

Many thanks to Sri Sankaran for reminding all about the 150th birth day of the great son of India, Rabindranath Tagore. In addition to the National anthem, if I remember correctly, he also presented us with the Vane Matharam.

He had innumerable poems, articles, travel diaries, short stories, novels to his credit. Many of his works were translated to English and he was a famous person in the West for his works. He developed the Rabindra sangeeth. He founded the Shantiniketan institution. He was a freedom fighter.

The British Government the then rulers of India presented the honour of knighthood to him in 1915. He resigned the honour within a few years protesting against the policies of the British Government.

He was the recipient of The Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

    Dear Ramanathan
Thank you for the comments. However, the famous 'Vande mathram....' was not written by Sri rabindra natha Tagore. It is a poem by Bankim chandra Chatterji. It was included in novel (Aanandamadhom) written by him in 1882. It is written in a mixture of two languages, Bengali and Sanskrit. In this poem the author is presenting a hymn to the Goddess Durga, identifying the Goddess as the personification of the nation, India.

It was the great poem, Gitanjali, which won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913.Rabindra nath Tagore is the only Indian to get this laurel in literature.
