You may be right. But, as a person living within the Kochi Corporation limit for the last 40 years or more, have slightly different opinion. I prefer to shift to my native place, a village in Palakkad district.
Ernakulam, for that matter Kochi, is developing in a very fast manner. People shift to this place for some reason or other. Noe thousands of workers are here from northern States such as Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, etc. Construction works are done by these people.
High-rise buildings are coming throughout the city. The shopping has shifted to new Malls. Cinema goers getting shifted to multiplex theaters in these malls. Food courts also attract them. But all these are always limited to a small section of the population.
Most unhappy situation is with regard to the the traffic. The time one has to spend in the vehicle to reach destination can never be predicted. Roads cannot stand this heavy traffic.

Ernakulam may be a dream destination to people of Kerala origin. Culturally, traditionally, language wise it is the center of amalgamation of the Northern and the Southern ways of life of the state. It is having all the facilities of the world. It was the biggest rail junction of Kerala and the largest airport of Kerala. In fact it should have been the Capital of Kerala instead of Thiruvananthapuram from all points of views. But because of the influences of the persons of Thiruvananthapuram the capital was fixed to be that place. Anyway except for this Ernakulam is the virtual capital of Kerala.
However, practically thinking it is fit only to be a dream place, and not the actual destination. First of all, all cannot settle down there as in that case Ernakulam will become the state itself. Secondly it is overcrowded as it is and the prices of the land is beyond the reach of middle class people. Thirdly the infrastructure is enough only for the population of about 10 - 15 years back. With that infrastructure the present population has to satisfy itself. To commute from one place to another and from and to Ernakulam and other places is a nightmare at present.
The successive Governments are trying in their own snails phase to improve and let us hope the snails phase change to a faster one and ,most of the infrastructure problems are solved shortly.
