Today, 21st September, is world Alzheimer's day

In this modern world several elderly persons are seen suffering from memory loss, otherwise known as dementia. According to studies conducted by Alzheimer's and Related Disorders' Society of India the number of Alzheimer's patients in Kerala is increasing.

In a study conducted in a Panchayath (Thiruvaniyur) in Ernakulam district about four percent persons belonging to the age group above 65 years are suffering from dementia. It is more among women. In Kochi city as well as in Thrissur district the occurrence is about 3.3 %. Among them more than fifty percent are affected by Alzheimer's disease too.

Use of tobacco especially smoking, liquor consumption, high blood pressure (not treated), genetical reasons etc. are said to be leading to this disease. Perhaps another reason for the increase may be the increased longevity of Kerala people.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease one can get. Forgetting your past and not realizing your loved ones is a very bad situation. It will more affect the loved ones than the patient for they are seeing it in front of them. Hope we will get rid of this disease soon.
