Milma, Kerala's dairy co-operative, has increased milk prices by Rs 3 per litre to Rs 23 as a short-term measure to bridge the demand-supply gap in milk production. It is also readying to boost milk output through French bovine breeds which reportedly yield a whopping 60 litres of milk per cow.

The state Cabinet, which met here, gave final nod to Milma to hike price by Rs 3 per litre at one go. Out of the increased price, the lion's share—as much as Rs 2.76 per litre—will go to the farmer, chief minister VS Achuthandan said.

This is the fifth time that the Achuthandan government has hiked milk prices, but never before it had wedged in such a steep increase.

While Kerala's local milk production per year has increased from 20.8 lakh litres to 21.3 lakh litres, it is still 20% short of the demand.

Karnataka and Maharashtra diaries meet Milma's milk demand, but these are not considered too economic, forcing the state to look to its own resources to boost production.

A recent study by Kerala Agriculture University has said that disproportionate increase in demand for milk and milk products is pushing up demand.

During the Sabarimala pilgrim season, Kerala's demand for ghee and ice cream went through the roof.

"To stop 14 lakh families in dairy farming from leaving the sector, the consumer will have to take a hike," state animal husbandry minister C Divakaran said.

"PK Mohanty report on the milk supply chain had mooted a hike of atleast Rs 4 per litre," Milma chairman PT Gopala Kurup said, adding that the increase was also part of the state's desperate drive to step up milk production by 30% in an year.

I just feel there is something wrong in the management set up of MILMA. If the Institutions in the neighbouring States can contain their milk prices, why can't it be so in Kerala?

The price is going up and simultaneously the quality of the milk is coming down. Very often it simply is the mix of milk powder. The very taste of milk powder comes prominently. People must react to this.

The milk served by MILMA is not of poor quality. It comes from the farmers of Kerala. There may be an 'extra water content' in the milk, but i don't think that the milk served by MILA is from the mix of milk powders. But, many other milk companies are not giving the standard ones. Last year almost all the milk products in Kerala failed meet the basic standards, except MILMA.

But the increase in milk price will help the diary farmers. We must remember that there has been increase in the price of other things in the past years. So in order to withstand with that requirements, it should be increases. Other ways, no one will work in diary fields and we will have to borrow the low standard milks from other states.
