Surendranatha Thilakan, one of the best actor of Malayalam as well as Indian cinema, known for his excellence in chracter, antagonist and protagonists roles. He was born on 15th July 1935 at Ayoor in Thiruvanathapuram district. Surendranatha Thilakan, one of the best actor of Malayalam as well as Indian cinema, known for his excellence in chracter, antagonist and protagonists roles. He was born on 15th July 1935 at Ayoor in Thiruvanathapuram district. He was popularly mentioned as the ' The Perumthachan of Malayalam Cinema '. He starred over 200 films as main artists as well as supporting artists. Thilakan starts his career as a theatre artists when he ventured in to full time acting after leaving intermediate college mid way in the year 1956. It was during his years in theatre that he renowned his skills in acting. Despite his long association with theatre, Thilakan became a house hold name only after only after his foray in to Malayalam Cinema. He was began his career in cinema with a role in the movie ' Periyar ' directed by P. J. Anthony in 1973. However the role in the film 'Ulkadal ' in1979 was first noticed. Thilakan established himself as an actor after he got his first state award in 1981 for his role in ' Yavanika '. In 1988, he received the National Film Award for best supporting actor for his performance in ' Rithubhedham '. Again in 1994 and 1998 he won state award for ' Santhanagopalam ' and ' Gamanam '. The film ' Kireedam ' directed by Sibi Malayil aws a mile stone in his career. In this film he played the role of Achuthan Nair, an honest and sincere police officer silently watching the fate of his son. Thilakan fell ill at the beginning of 2006 and was hospitalized for a long time. After recovering he slowly returned to acting. He subsequently criticized prominent figures of the Malayalam industry. In 2007, he acted in ' Ekantham ' for which he received a special mention from the jury. H e was suspended and issued show cause notices several time by the ' AMMA ', Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, which made him an open critic on Association's activities. Thilakan was admitted to hospital in Thrissur on August 1, 2012 and then shifted to KIMS hospital Trivandrum. He was in critical condition after suffering two heart attacks. Besides having cardiac problems. Thilakan was suffering from pneumonia. He had been put in a ventilator since then. Thilakan died on September 24, 2012 from complications resulting from his health problems.
