The best solution is to cultivate commodities our own means. The increase in food commodities is the greatest of them. But, it's very hard to know that almost all these are not coming from Kerala. We are buying these items from other states. Kerala people are in a hurry to construct new buildings and other modern constructions, leveling their agricultural fields.
The increase in fuel price is another reason. In order to withstand the transportation costs, the commodity prices have to be increased.
So hope that the commodity price also will decrease marginally according to the decrease in fuel price in the international market.
This consumer civilization is a great problem in our state. We want to get almost all the things in the latest version, eventhough it's not necessary.

The price increase of rice and vegetables on the increase. It is true.
We have to see the price increase in in different angle. We have to say it as cost of living increase.
There are four components are contributing the price increase.
1.Taxes
2.Middle man's commission
3.Dealers margin
4.Transportation and related labour charges.
Keralite's life style has changed. The consumption of Junk food, meat, milk and other ready to eat food are increased.
Medical expenses are going high.Spending on social need is going up.
Educational expenses are higher too.Fuel and electricity cost is going up.
Land for producing food items are reducing.Cash corps occupying that place. The labour charges are higher.
The old age peoples number is on the increase.Young generation is spoiling their health by using tobacco type items and liquor.
Consumerism is another cause.
The education system made people away from nature.
Like hundreds of situations we can find out.
But there is only one thing can change the situation-The attitude.

In Kerala price is increasing for everything. I think main cause for that is our attitude. Vegetables, rice etc. are coming from Tamilnadu, Andrapradhesh, and some other places. If we are ready to produce vegetables and rice, there will be a change in prices. Graduates and professionals are more in our state. But no body is ready to work hard and cultivate some vegetables or other commodities. Every youngster prefer white collar job. Our expenses are increasing but income is not increasing. So a middle class family finds it difficult to meet the two ends. A small thing we can do is have a kitchen garden .If all Malayalees are ready for that there will be some change. Tomato, Brinjal, Bitter gourd, Snake gourd, curry leaves, cucumber, spinach etc. are easy to cultivate. We can make the garden in the terrace also.We should give some more interest in agriculture.

The main concern in to the increased price of the essentials such as vegetables and rice are because of the government polices, as we have to bear a lot of hidden charges to bring those items to the end users, it's a results to we, the citizens of kerala as consumers to pay that high Price.
Taxes at the neighboring border states are higher and there is some hidden charges as well, and lack of productivity of the vegetables on the home state, and more and more Agri farms are now converted in to concrete farm's are also bigger Concern.
Let's educate and motivate our fellow keralites towards this concern and agriculture related informations.

first of all a big applause for you for putting a burning problem nowadays in Kerala. There are many reasons for the rise of price for food products. It has now come to a stage that a common man cannot afford to have good food to fill his hunger. And the Keralians are in their distress stage.
But the thing is, we are not interested and we are depending on other states for our basic food items. Another problem arising from this factor is that we have to give the transportation charges for our food items. So whenever there is rise in petrol or diesel price, then there will be rise in food commodities also.
In my opinion we should have a revaluation in our strategies towards agricuture. All of us should have atleast a small plot with vegetable garden and should take some effort with cultivation. If we continue like that there will be no food crisis. The government should also take some efforts to popularise some cheap agricultural plans for the existing farmers of Kerala.
Let we hope for the best in God's Own Country.

Yes, Let us have a small vegetable garden. I think cultivation of commodities is the only solution for this problem.

Price rise can be contained with people's participation. We should start more production oriented projects. For example vegetables can be taken as a typical problem. Why not each one of us start a small kitchen garden, at least those who have space for that.
Now Vegetable and Fruits Promotion Council of Kerala (VFPCK)are supplying materials for home vegetable gardens. They have planned it in such a way that the same can be grown in terrace also. They give pots with plants grown in it and scientific advise for the cultivation. Charges are not so high. It can well be compensated from the crops we collect from those plants.
Similarly self reliance in other possible areas are also possible. Soap can be made with very little expenditure.

Let us pass this message to all keralites - "Produce vegetables for our needs. Have a Kitchen Garden".
This is the season of Onam. Price of Vegetables is going to increase. Officials tracking vegetable prices said the local production of vegetables, with an eye on Onam season, has decreased with the onset of mansoon. Though there is no significant scarcity of vegetables, prices have moved up significantly over the last 3-4 months. Vegetable prices continue to fluctuate sharply promoting predictions of a grim scene for the ensuing festival season.
When we talk about Onam, first thing that comes to our mind is "OnaSadya" (Onam feast). Vegetables prices are increasing. Remember the traditional Malayalam proverb "Kanam Vittum Onam Unnanam"(Meaning, one may even sell off one's possessions to celebrate Onam with the traditional feast)
If increase in price is continuing like this…"Malyalik Kanam vittu Onam unnendi varumo?"

To lijin, fuel price is not a reason for price rise since raiways have special rate for food items and vegetable transport and are faster, may be nokku kooli, irakku kooli etc will be more than transport cost itself. we are too late in educating the loaders and workers

The reason for the price increase is not far to seek. Price increase is common to all places. Due to the limited land area coupled with huge demand have forced many to convert agricultural land to residential tenements thus affecting the area under cultivation. This increases the import of vegetables etc from neighboring State of Tamil Nadu. However a beginning could be made at least to have a kitchen garden, thus reducing the cost of vegetables to some extent Another reason could be turning the land area under various crops to cash crops due to the added incentive it offers thereby the people have adopted the formula high sell (cash crops) and buy cheap (vegetables) Definitely cash crops are costlier to vegetables. Do you agree ?

ROSHAN,you mean revive agriculture by paying 250rs wage for half day work. you will end up 50% more cost for producing than buying from market.secondly, ofcourse we have a land problem, but plant pots and your home terraces can be converted to a green gaarden.thirdly we must cultivate high yielding bacteria resistant variety.like shown yesterday in tv in dubai, local govt authoritie went to the fruit and vegetable market and compared the price index of fruits and vegetables a month back and today, finding no justification for the increase, fined vendors70000Rs to 140000 spot fine.why cant we try it here?

If we are ready to spend some time for gardening, we can produce vegetables. There is no size restriction for kitchen garden. It saves you a lot of money. Just think about lovely fruits and vegetables in your kitchen garden just waiting to be picked. Is't that good?
