Early Life and Education

K.P. Dhanapalan was born on April 4, 1950 in a small village hamlet called North Paravoor in the Ernakulam district of central Kerala. His father's name was Pankajakshan K.K. and mother's name was Madhavi P.M. When he was 3 years old, he was admitted to a local school to start his academic career. He completed his formal education in that school itself. Later, he was enrolled in a reputed government school near his birthplace to continue his secondary and higher secondary education. As a young student, he was more focused on his studies and took interest in what was being taught in the class. So, he was more studious during his secondary school years. Once he reached the higher secondary school level, he started to form independent opinions about various things that happen around him. During this period, he was attracted towards the ideology propagated by the Congress party through its Students' wing Kerala Students Union (KSU). He used to be a silent spectator in the meetings organized by the local student leaders and got impressed by the topics that were discussed there. During those meetings, mainly the topics relating to the students were discussed. He was moved by the versions of information the student leaders tried to propagate through those meetings. As a result of this, he became a member of the student wing of Indian National Congress. Despite his participation in the student politics, he found time to do his studies. The topics taught in the missing classes were covered by him with the help of his classmates. Hence, he could do well in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate exams and get reasonable marks and grades.

Emboldened by his success in the SSLC examination, the young Dhanapalan decided to pursue his studies further and joined a local junior college for a pre-degree course. At the pre-degree course level, he took up the science stream to follow his dream of becoming a doctor or an engineer. Due to his active participation in the student politics and lack of guidance in academics, he could not get sufficient rank in the entrance examination that tests the suitability of the candidates for different professional courses. Hence, he had to shelve his dreams to pursue his academics in professional courses. However, he got a good percentage of marks in the pre-degree examinations. As a junior college student, he actively participated in different movements and organized the students for various causes using his compulsive speeches and close relationships with different people. Subsequently, he joined the famous UC College in Aluva for pursuing his education at the degree level. At the degree level, his area of specialization was Chemistry. For the first two years in UC College, he more actively participated in various political movements outside the college premises. During this period, he gained necessary contacts in the District Congress Committee office and he could use them to his advantage later in his life. In the final year, he went slow on his political activities and concentrated on his studies so that he could pass the degree examinations. His timely change of strategy paid off and he not only passed the examinations but also secured good marks and grades. Later in his life, he entered into matrimonial alliance with his sweetheart Sumam Dhanapalan. The marriage was solemnized on July 07, 1979 at a temple near his birthplace. The couple is blessed with two sons and they are doing well.
