About the college
Government medical college of Trivandrum is one of the best medical college in Kerala. Inaugrated in 27 November 1951 this college is considered as a principal agency in providing the Kerala model of health care and is the one of the most prestigious medical institution in Kerala. It is the first medical college in Kerala. After a few years of establishment it was upgraded to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Science also known as AIIMS and has been ranked 21 among the medical colleges in India. The college and hospital has been consistently able to maintain its high quality standards despite the enormous number of patient admissions and low-cost treatment facilities. Some governmental aids has helped to improve the status of this college.
Location
Located in Thiruvananthapuram, 6 km away from the Central Railway station and KSRTC bus station, it ensures adequate transport facilities down to this college. The campus itself spreads over an area of 324680 sq. meter. The college is located about 5km away from the International Airport of Thiruvananthapuram. The campus is located in the north-west border of the Thiruvananthapuram city. Also the Chalakuzhi road which connects to the National Highway NH 47 is located ahead the college campus. The college itself provides a real image of the beauty of our God's Own Country.
Establishment and Functioning
Government medical college of Thiruvananthapuram was the second government college in India and was established after great efforts from the people for the increase in the quality of health sector in Kerala. It's establishment has paved a way down for the increase in the efficiency of health sector in our state. After the establishment of this college Kerala has achieved great heights in the health sector just as that of a developed country which other states are trying to adopt. The first batch of MBBS students to this college were taken in the inaugration year of 1951. The inaugration of the medical college hospital was done in 1954. The cancer block and the artificial limb centre was started in the subsequent years in 1958 and 1964 respectively. The mental and the opthalmalic hospital came up in the 70's. The super speciality block was launched in 2011 and the Cadavar organ transplant for the first time in a government hospital in Kerala came in 2012. In 2013 it became the first government hospital in South India which produced a test tube baby.
Facilities
The college campus consists of several hospitals and other institutions too including Medical College Hospital (MCH), College of Nursing, College of Pharmaceutical sciences, Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum Dental College, Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Priyadarshini Institute of Paramedical Sciences and Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital for Women and Children (SAT Hospital). Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) is also a part of the school campus . The campus provides a large number of facilities.
1) Hostels- The campus consists of separate hostels for men and women. The men's hostel was constructed in the year 1952 and the women's hostel in the year 1953. Both the hostels are well equipped and clean. It provides all the basic necessities to the students. The scenic beauty from the hostels and the friendly staff here adds to the value of these hostels.
2) Medical Hospital- The medical hospital is well known for providing quality and comprehensive health care irrespective of the economic and social status. It is the largest multi speciality hospital of South Kerala. The hospital consists of the main hospital block, Trauma care, Casualty, Out Patient Department Block, Super specialty block, KHRWS Pay wards and Administrative block. This 3000 bedded hospital admits 80,000 patients a year and provides over 7,500,000 OP consultation. Due to the high efficiency the hospital manages 55 major operations, 125 minor operations, 35 normal deliveries and 15 Caesarean Sections per day.
3) Super speciality block- A super speciality block exclusively having all medical and surgical specialities and facilities has been established alongside the college in the year 2010. It consisted of Nephrology, Urology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Medical and Surgical gastroenterology. This 253 bed super speciality block covers an are area of 160000sq ft. It is also embedded with other facilities like eight operation theatres, 29-bed six intensive care units, haemo dialysis unit and a nal transplant unit.
4) Information center- With the contributions from the alumni of the college, an information center was established in the hospital which provides all information regarding the facilities available in the hospital as well as clears any doubts regarding prescriptions or drugs. This helps in more efficient management.
5) Sports and games- The College and the hospital buildings were separated by playgrounds for football, hockey, a cricket pitch. The college also consists of courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball and badminton. It also has a massive 400 meter track. These facilities ensure that the children are engaged in physical activities in addition to studies. There are also several indoor games provided by the institution. These make the students enjoy their leisure time more pleasantly.
6) Library- The campus consists of a large library which was established during the 1960s. It is flooded with plenty of books of all genres. It ensures increased knowledge in students rather than practical education.
7) Transportation- An efficient transport system is run by this educational institution. There are college buses which connects to different parts of the campus. Even though a good quality transport system is maintained students prefer to go by motorcycles and cycles.
8) Other facilities- The campus consists of a limb center, Mental hospital and an Opthalmic hospital which was established in the recent past by the school authorities. The mental hospital in the campus is the second largest one in India. The college has also brought about the Cadaver organ retrieval and transplantation making it the first Governmental hospital in Kerala to do so. The college also has a canteen and a large auditorium.
Courses and Departments
There are a number of courses that are provided down by this college. All the courses provide elementary education down to the children with enough practical skills. The most important among them is the M.B.B.S which has a annual intake of 20 students. It provides quality education embedded with professionalism to the career seeking students. There is an annual intake of 89 students in M.D course and 18 seats for D.M. The Diploma course has 71 seats. The Dental Mechanics Certificate Course has an annual intake of 6 students. The dental college was established in 1959 and from then it was also included in the courses offered by the school. The Bachelor of Pharmacy has an annual intake of 60 students and for the Master of Pharmacy there is an annual intake of 26 students. Medical College toxicology lab, Animal lab, Drug information center,Morphine tablet manufacturing and Medicinal garden are the other facilities that are available with this course. B.Sc. in Nursing and M.Sc. in Nursing are provided to 60 and 28 students respectively. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Tehnology, Diploma in Radiological Technology, Diploma in Dialysis Technology, Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery, Diploma in Clinical Child Development and Diploma in Pharmacy are some of the other courses provided by the college.
