Mask of Kummattikali


As per studies, Thrissur district is found to be as the origin place of Kummatti dance forms. Original form of this traditional dance performs can be easily seen in one among the Bhadrakali temples in Palakkad district. Interesting costume is a main feature of Kummattikali. Dance performers come with a colorful wooden mask representing faces of Lord Sri Krishna, Darika and Kiratha. Apart from the masks of these three characters, dance performers can also wear the masks of Narada and hunters during their performers.

From which trees are these masks made? This question is quite common here. Generally, people are making use of the wooden parts of hog plum tree and jack fruit tree to make masks for performances. Skirt made from plaited grass is a main feature of this Onam dance performance. To get perfect look during dance performance, many dancers wear bunches of plaited grass on their body.

Talla is one among the characters in Kummattikali dance performance. Here, Talla comes with toothless and wide open mouth to entertain people. For more entertainment, Talla is given long sticks in hands. Most of the stories performed in Kummattikali are related with stories related to lord Shiva. Old women character holding stick in dance performance is given the name Thamma.

As per belief, Thamma is considered as the mother of all beings. What all can we give when Kummatti enter in front of our house? This question is quite common here. Generally, it is advised to make Kummatti happy by giving rice, jaggery and cash. Presence of Onavillu is a highlighting feature of this Onam dance performance.

Onavillu and kummattikali


Onavillu is a string instrument with bow made from areca nutwood tree. Strings of Onavillu are beaten with a narrow bamboo stick to produce sound. Which all stories are taken for the performance of Kummattikali? Generally, stories of Kummattikali are taken from stories like Darika Vadham and Ramayana. Apart from the above specified stories, you can also find stories of Lord Shiva and folk tales like Manhan Nayare Pattu for this dance performance.
