Pinarayi Vijayan was born in Pinarayi in Kannur district on 21 March 1944. During his child hood his family was very poor. He is married Kamala and has two children, Veena and Vivek.

Pinarayi Vijayan put his first step in to Kerala politics through student union activities and joined the Communist Party in the year 1964. He was president and secretary of the Kerala Student's Federation (KSF), and he was worked for youths by becoming a president of Kerala State Youth Federation (KSYF). Then he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in the year 1970. He was elected as minister in Kerala government in the year between 1996 and 1998. In the year 1998 he was elected as CPI(M) state secretary, then He was served as politburo of CPI(M) in 2002.
But recently there was a great issue and controversy about Pinarayi Vijayan's house, at that time Pinarayi Vijayan's house photo was talk of the town.
