General Information about Kadalundy
Kadalundy is located in Kozhickode district, Kerala state. It's just 19 km from the Kozhikode town. The place is easily accessed by all the transportation modes. Kozhikode has it's own railway station, airport of International standard and well connected road networks. The place, Kadalundy, got it's name from the Kadalundy river flowing through this area. Spreading over an area of 2 sq.km, Kadalundy bird sanctuary is one of the most famous attraction in Kadalundy. The bird sanctuary is a nest to wide varieties of birds. It is a home to more than hundred species of native birds and also welcomes about 60 varieties of migratory during the peak seasons. The bird sanctuary actually consists of small islands,lined with a hilly area offering you an enchanting visual treat. The greatest peak in this area shoot upto a height of 200 m. You can get onto there and enjoy the vantage view of the land beneath with it's exotic water bodies and bird lives.
A trip to Kadalundy bird sanctuary need only one day of time. You can catch a bus from Kozhikode and come to the sanctuary in the morning. Keep something with you like some food items and all. So that you can sit and watch the bird life in all the corners of the sanctuary without wasting times for meal. Better keep a camera with you to capture the birds in your reals. Usually the place is crowded with families and friends' groups.
You can spot varieties of birds in the sanctuary by having a walk. The chirping of the birds along with the calm surrounding in the sanctuary will give you a peaceful atmosphere amidst in the city life. It hosts some beautiful and rare birds like terns, gulls, egrets, herons, sandpipers, brahmini kites, cormorants etc. But, plan your trips such that you can spot the migratory birds too. The bird life is almost doubled during the months of February to March due to the visits of migratory birds in flocks.
If you want to see the turtles, you need to undertake the boat cruse. The boat trip will be arrange by the forest department. It's not only the birdlife, that will attract you here. Kadalundy is also known for a wide variety of fish, mussels and crabs. The nearby water bodies and the Kadalundy river are home for all these aquatic creatures.
Don't worry much of the climate condition in Kadalundy. The sanctuary is enjoying a pleasant climate due to coastal geography of the place. But avoid your trip during the months of May to August. The heavy rains during the season won't fulfill your need to spot birds here. The best season to have a trip to Kadalundy bird sanctuary is during the months of February to March. This is the time which the sanctuary sees a variety of migratory birds. You won't need any accommodation facilities if you are visiting the sanctuary alone. You can have your visit in the sanctuary with a single day trip.
