About Kerala Kalamandalam


Kerala Kalamandalam is one of the famous art centre in India for learning performing arts like Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, Kudiyaattam, Thulla, Kuchipudi etc. The famous malayalam poet Vallathol Narayana Menon was the founder of Kerala Kalamandalam. It is established in 1930. Kalamandalam follows an ancient education system of residential tutelage, that is both the teachers and students stay in kalamandalam with mutual cooperation.

How to reach Kalamandalam


Kerala Kalamandalam is situated in the village of cheruthuruthy in Thrissur district on the banks of Bharathapuzha river. The nearest Airport to reach here is Nedumbasseri Airport in Eranakulam. The nearest Railway Station is Thrissur Railway Station. Bus survice is always available from Railway Station to Cheruthuruthy. Those who coming in bus can directly go to cheruthuruthy.

History of Kalamandalam


There was a phase in Kerala histoty where the art forms like Kathakali, Koodiyattam and Mohiniyattam were in threat. This fear of extiction forced Vallathol Narayana Menon and Mukundaraja to set up a society called Kerala Kalamandalam for the welfare of art forms in Kerala. Thus an inagural ceremony was conducted in 1930 and Kerala Kalamandalam was established.

Tourism in Kalamandalam



Tourism in Kalamandalam is generally consist of three stages. The first is 'A Day With the Masters'. This session the tourists are able to spend some hours in the kalamandalam campus and can have a direct exposure to the masters of various disciplines. The tourists can have a chat with them and can clarify their doubts about various art forms.

The next stage is to visit the kalamandalam Koothambalam which is a sign of Kerala's temple heritage. It is built according to the principles of Natya-shasthra,so it is also known as Natyagriha. It is composed of many archeological features. Traditionally Koothu and Koodiyattam is performed at the Koothambalam. Watching these traditional art perfomance at the Koothambalam is delightful experience.

The third stage is to visit the Art Gallery where there are may statues of elephants and Kathakali performing charecters. The walls are decorated with excellent mural paintings and we can see many masks of Kathakali, Koodiyattam and other performing arts.

Where to stay in Kalamandalam


There is a Govt. Guest House and PWD Rest House at cheruthuruthy, 2 kms away from the kalamandalam campus. Visitors usually stay there. Rooms are always available and rent is quite reasonable except few good food. Tourists can also stay in Star hotels in Thrissur where you get your luxuries and all delicious dishes. It takes only less an hour journey to kalamandalam from these hotels. For students, Kalamandalam provides hostels adjacent to the main campus at Vallathol Nagar near to Cheruthuruthi. They can either cook their food or can have it from outside. Kalamandalam offers only vegetarian food in its canteen.
