The first TEST match in cricket history was played at Melbourne Cricket Ground between England and Australia in 1876-77. In this match, Australia had defeated England by 45 runs. Though the origin of cricket took place in England, but after it, Australia was the second major cricket playing nation.
Along with the basics of cricket was laid the foundation for Australian colonies. It is said that the match played at Sydney in 1830 was the first cricket match played in Australia and Governor Mc Curry had ordered the bat and ball for this match to be made in government workshop. This match was played between the teams of army men and citizen. In the same way, the first match at Tasmania was played between Hobart Club and Governor Eleven. The first match in Victoria was played between Melbourne cricket club and armymen 11. Initially, the means of communication were not much developed but still the competition was tough. It also happened that after a club was formed, another club followed. The Australians, by nature, love challenges. They do not show much interest in competitions that are not very challenging. Australian soldiers who inspires fear and awe in times of war appear lackadaisical at other times or in normal circumstances. In cricket too, the Australians want to win. Their attention is riveted on winning the trophy and Ashes. First the district cricket associations, then the state associations and later the Australian cricket board was established. Attraction, firm determination and sponsorship have remained the main characteristics of cricket Australia.
