Thiruvananthapuram- The land of Kings


Thiruvananthapuram is the capital city of Kerala located near the coastal regions of south Kerala. It is also known as Ananthapuri, The land of kings. Thiruvananthapuram is attracted by the tourists not only because it is the capital of God's own country, but also the art, culture and tourism of the King's land. Historical Importance of Thiruvananthapuram
If we look to the history of Thiruvanabthapuram, it was the capital of Rajas of Travancore in 1750. The kingdom was under the leadership of Marthanda Verma in those days. Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal were the most efficient leaders in this kingdom. The cultural and economic prosperity of Kerala was developed under their reign.

In the ancient periods Thiruvananthapuram was known as Syanandoorapuri. It was known as Thiruvithancore in the time of Rajas of Travancore. The present name Thiruvananthapuram is originated due to the presence of Sree Padmanabha temple in the heart of the city. Padmanabha in named after lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology and Anantha is his another name. The malayalam meaning of Thiruvananthapuram is 'Abode of Lord Anantha'.

Political importance of Thiruvananthapuram
The place is the capital city of Kerala. The State Legislative Assembly and Secretariat of Kerala is located Kerala. The residence of the Governor of Kerala is also at Thiruvananthapuram. The city is also the headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram district.

Technological Importanace
Thiruvananthapuram is one of the main centres of science and technology in India itselt. Vikram Sarabhai Space Research Centre is located in Thumpa near Thiruvananthapyram. It also includes Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology etc. Thiruvananthapuram is the core scientific research area in India.

Kovalam Beach : Kovalam beach is about 16 kms from the capital city. It is one of the favourite hot spot for tourist in the recent years. Sree Padmanabha Temple: This temple is located in Eastfort, Thiruvananthapuram. As it is situated in the core of Thiruvananthapuram it has its spiritual value. The temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu so as its name Padmanabha. There is a big pond infront of this temple which is also an attraction. The seven storey carved gopuram is also a sight to be seen.

Veli Tourist Village: Veli is another major attraction in Thiruvananthapuram. It is very famous for water sports, floating bridges, garden, children's park etc. It is situated in the shore of Arabian Sea and beautiful Veli lagoons. It is about 10 kms away from Thiruvananthapuram.
