Padmanabhpuram palace is the headquarters of the southernmost kingdom of India the Travancore State. Padmanabhapuram is located on the national Highway between Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. Padmanabhapuram palace is built in the Travancore architectural style. You can see 17th and 18th century murals , carved mahogany ceilings, secret underground passages, coloured mica windows, inner courtyards, museum, durbar hall,four poster medicinal bed, Belgian mirror, granite dance halls, special black shiny floors and many pictures of Lord Krishna. Padmanabhapuram palace was named by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda varma (1712 - 1758) the legendary King of Travancore. It is said that the palace had 86 acres of land surrounding it with a big moat infested with crocodiles surrounding the palace guarding it. Now you will be able to see the moat or rather what was left of it on either side of the palace entrance. The total area which is administered by the government of Kerala is just 6.5 acres. there is a large court yard separating the main entrance from the palace where it is said that the king used to meet his guests and visiting dignatories.
There are about 127 rooms in the palace , most of them large and airy and were used for the dwelling and the administration purposes, the rest of the small rooms were either utility areas or toilets. All thre rooms have intricate carvings made in Teak and the jackfruit tree and all the rooms are interconnected with narrow verandahs.About the Archeological Museum of the Padmanabhapuram palace
There is an archeological Museum built where the royal stable and the guard stood in the olden days. The museum is a treasure trove of carvings, mural paintings, sculptures, coins and metalware, stone inscriptions, manuscripts, armoury which date as old as 18th century.. The museum is well organized and period maintained. If you are traveling by air, you will have to reach Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and then take take to road to Thuckalai and then Palace.
If you are travelling by train you can get down at Iraniel which is about 8 kilometers from the palace. You can also get down at Nagerkoil which is just 15 kilometers from the palace.
If you are travelling by Road, the palace is just 2 kilometers away from Thuckalai . Regular plying of state buses are there from Thiruvananthapuram as well as Nagerkoil and Kanyakumari.
