Muniyaras / Dolmens in Marayoor Village
Marayoor Villages is one of the five villages in the state of Kerala where people from Tamilnadu hid away from the wrath of Tippu Sultan. Dolmens, Rock paintings and many other Megalithic monuments are found in these villages.
Marayoor Village has become a tourist attraction or a destination by itself as it has Megalithic historical monuments like Dolmens or Muniyaras as they are called in malayalam. These are mass burial chambers which are uised to bury may be the whole family etc. History at Marayoor Village
Marayoor village seems to be a part of the stone age civilization which has been found to be as old as 10000 BC. You can find varieties of Dolmens and rock paintings here which declare the rich heritage of the people lived here in those days. The land in this region is unique in the sense that there are about 5 villages hidden away in the mountains and even now aboriginal tribals inhabit these villages with their unique customs. The five villages were created and called as Anju Nadu by the people from Tamil Nadu who came this side to hide from Tippu Sultan after Tippu defeated Thirumalai Naicker in the 18th century. the villages are Kanthalloor, Keezhanthur, Karayur, Marayoor and Kottakudi. Dolmens are portal tombs or portal graves which is a type of megalithic tomb with a single chamber. These chambers consists of three or more vertical or upright stones holding an horizontal cap stone or a table . Usually these dolmens are covered with earth or smaller stones to make a barrow but in many cases the earth and stoines have weathered away leaving the stones holding the cap stone intact. These Dolmen are found in many parts of the world namely at the Baltic and the North sea coasts, Irish sea coasts and at many more places. Megalithic Dolmens in Marayoor Village
These Dolmens are found in Marayoor in the state of Kerala of India. They are called Muniyara in Malayalam. Some of these Dolmens contain many burial chambers and there are some scooped out in the laterite and lined with granite slabs. All of these have cap stones. You can find dozens of these Dolmens / Muniyaras in and around the area of Thenkasinathar Temple on the banks of the river Pamba.
You can also see rock paintings on the south western slope of the plateau over looking the river Pamba. These have been some of the tourist attractions of the area for quite sometime now. Not only from the stone age you can also find dolmens from the iron age also here that too by the left banks of the river Pamba. They have used neatly dressed granite slabs and at least you can one of them has a perfect circle with a dilameter of 28 cms and another with a height of 140 - 170 cms . Framents of burial urns are also available in the regions. These urns have been used for the burials of the common people and the dolmens have been used by the peopleof high social status. How to Reach Marayoor Village
The nearest Airport is the Kochi International airport at Nedumbassery at about 150 kilometers away from the village. Taxis are available from the airport a/c as well as non a/c cars at the airport prepaid counters.
If you are travelling by road, you can get in from Tamil nadu as well as Kerala since it is located in the Idukki district. This Marayoor village is on the road to Munnar from Coimbatore and Pollachi. There are buses plying from Munnar also to reach marayoor which is placed at just 40 kilometers from Munnar.
Aluva / Alwaye is the nearest railway station but it is 120 kilometers away. you can get taxis or buses from the station to the Marayoor village. Marayoor as a day trip from Munnar
You will not find good Accomodation facilities at Marayoor because tourists prefer to visit the place and return to Munnar. You can stay at Munnar and make Marayoor as a day excursion trip, you can start early in the morning and return by the evening.
If you are travelling from Tamilnadu you can get down at Marayoor and then reach Munnar by the evening.
