There are numerous benefits of staying in a homestay but there are some guidelines too for that.
An homestay is not a mechanical place where you just come, stay and go off to your place. It is a place where hosts stay with you, mingle , have food with you and treat you like one in their family.
There are many Homestays in Kerala which are located at well known tourist destinations in Kerala. You have to be careful while choosing one for your stay during your vacation into Kerala. You should be able to feel at home, one among them and should be able to follow some of the guidelines they have at their homes.

The main highlight of staying in homes and small owned properties is the special care and personal attention which will be given to you there is no impersonal efficiency. Living with another family that too of a different tradition and culture will be a bit difficult, understanding and patience will be able to help you out. There is no point in keeping to yourself when you are staying with a family even if is a matter of a few days. Try to understand the cultures and the traditions of the hosts and try to maintain friendship you have with them. You ill feel a differet person later.

It would be better if you could choose your homestay according to your taste and budget. Usually all the homestays offer Bed and breakfast. If you need other meals you might have to inform them earlier. If you don't to join them for meals you will have to tell them that also.

Call them up or try to contact them by mail. Find out all the necessities you might need are available or not. Check out the details about the rooms. If everything comes out allright book the room and confirm through a mail.
They might require payment in advance particularly in the peak season. So if you can confirm your program and you like the homestay, confirm by paying by money transfer or credit card. Or else pay as soon as you reach the place but confirm your booking. 
This is not a hotel and so you will have to follow some guidelines which the hosts usually follow. So do try and understand their feelings and behave accordingly.
You have to remember that this is a home from a completely different culture and that they should also be finding it a bit difficult to adjust with you.
