Puthuppally in Kottayam district is the assembly election constituency of our ex chief minister and opposition leader Oommen Chandy. Puthuppally was constituted as an assembly constituency during the year 1956. In the assembly elections held in 1965 and 1967, E.M George the candidate of CPM party won the election in Puthuppally. In the year 1970, Oommen Chandy was the candidate of INC against E.M George in Puthuppally and he won the election with a majority of 7288 votes. There after he won all the assembly elections (held in 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006) in Puthuppally with a majority of more than 10000 votes.
2006 was the remarkable year of Oommen Chandy. In that year he won the assembly election against Sindhu Joy (candidate of CPM) with an unbeatable margin of 19863 votes from Puthuppally constituency.
Now its time for the assemble elections 2011 and we can hope that the great leader Oommen Chandy will win this time also from the Puthuppally constituency.
