In the year 1970 he stood in the General Elections for the first time in Kerala at the Puthupally constituency. He defeated his nearest rival E M George of the CPM who had won the eartlier assembly elections of 1965 and 1967.
From 1970 to the year 2006 assembly general elections, Oommen Chandy has not looked back and he was winning each and every election and with an increasing margin of votes than that of the rival candidates whoever it may be.
