In 1733 AD 'Marthandavarma' the ruler of Thiruvithamkur(Thiruvananthapuram) had reconstructed the temple.The main deity of the temple is Lord Padmanabhaswamy which is a form of Lord Vishnu in Ananthashayanam posture. This temple is famous for its Dravidian Art of construction. The stone carvings and mural paintings of the temple made it an unique one in Kerala.
The Gopuram of the temple is seven tier and has a 100 foot. The corridor of the temple consists of 365 and one quarter sculptured granite stone pillars with carvings, which is the major attraction of the temple.The corridor ends to the sanctum sanctorum. There is a 'Nataka Sala' at the ground floor under the Gopuram where the famous art of Kerala,'Kathakali' was played.
The deity of Lord Padmanabhaswamy is depicted in a sanctum sanctorum known as 'Garbhagriha'. The Lord Vishnu is in a posture of 'Ananthashayana'. The idol is developed in such a way that the face of Lord Vishnu is looking upwards and enjoying the smell of lotus kept in his left hand. His right hand hangs over Lord Shiva.The Garbhagriha is known as 'Ottakkal Mandapam' since it is carved out of single stone.The deity is visible through three doors.We can see the face and 'Shiva linga' under his hand through the first door, Lord Brahma seated an a lotus through the second door and feet of Lord Vishnu through the third door.
