His actual name is Surendranatha Thilakan.He is tailor made artist for cinema and every role is safe in his hands. He is known for his realistic acting and he is one of the senior artists in the Malayalam cinema field now. He was born on 12 September 1938. His native place is Ayroor at Pathanamthitta district. Thilakan had started his career as a theatre artist. He is a known drama artist before starting his film career. He had formed a drama troupe called the Mundakayam Nataka Samithy with his friends. He worked with Kerala peoples Arts club and P.J. Antony's group. He also played in several radio plays presented by All India Radio.
His first film is Ulkadal, but he got only a minor role in that film. His noticed role was in a film Kollangal, in which his character name is Kallu Varkey. He has become a leading actor in Malayalam film after recieving first State Award in the film Yavanika in 1981. His contributions to Malayalam film is ever memorable. He had recieved National Film awards two times. In 1988, he had won Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film Hrithubhedam.In 2008, he had won Special Jury Award for the film Ekantham.
He had won Kerala state Film Awards for many times. He has got Second Best Actor Award for the films Yavanika(1982), Yaatra(1985), Panchagni(1986), Thaniyavarthanam(1987), Mukhti and Dhwani(1988),Kaatathoru Pen Poovu. He had recieved Best Actor Award for the film Perunthachan for his leading role of Perunthachan(character name).In 1994 he got Best Actor Award for the film Santhanagopalam.
He had got Filmfare Awards for the film Perunthachan for Best Actor in 1990 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
He had got Bahadoor award for his contributions to Malayalam cinema in 2002 and Chalachithra Ratna Award by Kerala Film Critics Association.
He was awarded Padmashri on 25 January 2009 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
