Ooomen chandy is the opposition leader of kerala, Currently He is celebrating his 40th years as member of assembly. He has been member of assembly since his first election in 1970, from then on he contested in 8 election in which he never lost from puthupally. He was minister in the cabinet for 4 times, thrice in K.Karunakaran led govt and Once with AK Antony. In the year 2004 he was appointed as Chief Minister of Kerala after resignation of A.K Antony

Oommen Chandy Started His Political life from high school by joining Kerala Students Union (KSU) in .He was active Member of KSU's Student Wing in St George College Puthupally. His full hearten service earned him the post of Unit President of KSU at St George High School, Puthupally. Later he was elected as the State president of KSU in the tear 1967 to 1969, for a short time he was also the president of All Kerala Balajana Sakyam. As a member of KSU he made his first step in the Mainstream of Kerala politics later he went on to become the president of Youth congress in the state level, he served as member of the AICC. He WAS also active participant in the Mass movement led by trade unions like INTUC addressing the cause concerning the commoner.

His active involvement in the mainstream politics was impressive that it draws the attention of the ace veteran leader K. Karunakaran. This set a mile stone in the life of Oommen chandy, with blessings of K. Karunakaran he was appointed as the candidate from Puthupally constituency in kotayam district in the year 1970. In his first ever election he could bring Victory for congress in the constituency defeating E.M George by a margin of 7228 votes, who was the sitting candidate of Puthupally constituency for the past two Elections. From the year of 1970 to the year 2006 Oommenchandy remained intact for the, he won the 6 constitutive elections from Puthupally constituency. In 2010 he his 40 the year in Kerala assembly, it is a mile stone that any one couldn't even think of.

He remained as member of Assembly for 7 years from 1970 to 1977 because emergency was imposed on the state by Indhira Gandhi govt from 1975 to 1977 in the darkest hours of independent Indian's history. He made his next entry in to the Assembly as minister of Labour in Karunakaran Led govt; this was in the year 1977. Then on he was regular member of cabinet

Over these years Oommen chandy was Ministers of Kerala four times, he was minister for three times in Karunakaran Govt and Once in Antony govt, He even refused the offer of Cabinet post in 1995 to 2001 Antony govt, and this fueled the speculation of a rift between him and Antony
In his second terms he was Labour minister in K. Karunakaran Led Govt in 1977 as. As minister of labour he was part of historic decision to grant Unemployment Allowance to the Unemployed Educated youth of the State
In 1980 govt he served the State in the role of Home minister under K karunakaran Led govt. He brought Revolutionary Changes in Kerala police
In his Third time as the Minister he was in charge of the Finance Ministry in 1991, his great leader ship brought back the economy back on track.
In 2004 he was appointed as the chief minister of Kerala after AK Antony resigned from the post following various allegations, He was the 19th Chief Minister of Kerala he continued till 2006. As chief Minister of Kerala he introduced the policy of "Adhi vegam Bahu dooram" to speed up the tasks under the govt

Oommen chandy was appointed in the post of Opposition leader buy UDF in 2006. After UDF suffered a huge lose in the elections because of V.S Achuthanandan Effect. His Contribution as Opposition Leader is Commendable. As leader of opposition he was able to coordinate members of UDF as a single unit and managed most of the internal issues amicably.
As leader of opposition he was critical in his stand against the ruling party, he criticized LDF on various issues from Smart city to the issue of Madani, he was successful in using all these against the ruling govt this is evident from the panchayath Election results. He is on the run to become the next chief minister of Kerala; looking at the current scenario in Kerala it is assured.

Defeated E.M George of CPI (M) by a margin of 7288, it was his first entry in to Kerala Assembly

1977

I t was the first election after Emergency in India, in every other states of Kerala Congress suffered Huge defeat it was in Kerala were Congress won. In this election he defeated PC Cherian (BLD) by a margin of 15910. In his second term he was appointed as the Minister of Labour, His work as minister of Labour commendable

1980

This was the Oommenchandy's Third Election; he contested election under the banner of INC (U), which formed after the split of Congress party in 1980. In this election he won against Panicker .MR.G by a majority of 13659 votes

1982

In 1982 election Oommen chandy contested the election Under INC (A), under the Leader ship of Sri A.K Antony. He won the Election by Margin of 15983 votes against Thomas Rajan Independent Candidate

1987

1987 ELECTION WAS Oommenchandys fifth to the Kerala assembly, this time his opponent was Mr Vassan V.N of CPM, he won this election by a margin of 9164 votes

1991

This Time as well Oommen chandy contested against Mr. Vasan V.N of CPM, Oommen chandy improved his margin from 9164 to 13811 in this Election

1996

Oomen chandy contested this Election against the Reji Zacharia of CPM; he won by a margin of 10155 votes in this Election

2001

In 2001 election he won against Cherian Philip of CPM by a margin of 12575, who was actually a member of INC in past Quieted the party on Disputes with leader ship. Anton was the Chief Minister in this Cabinet but Oommen chandy was taken over the charge of CM later in this Term in 2004. He was the 19th chief minister of Kerala; he remained in the post for two years till 2006

2006

In 2006 election UDF govt suffered a huge defeat against The Prominent LDF, but Ommen chandy continued his Dream Run, he again won the election from Puthupally defeating Sindhu joy, who is a prominent leader SFI at that time by a margin of 19863 votes. It was his largest ever margin in his all election history
