Nokkukooli Hits Headlines Again in Kerala
Nokkukooli, the obnoxious trade union practice, has again reared its ugly head in Kerala. This time Kochouseph Chittippilly was at the receiving end of it.
Nokkukooli – The Evil Practice Unique to Kerala!
Nokkukooli is again hitting the headlines. This time its victim is none other than Mr. Kochouseph Chittilappilly, the prominent Kerala Indistrialist, who presides over a business empire of Rs. 500 crores. V-Star, sister concern of V-Guard Industries, was the receiving end this evil trade union practice. The other day, CITU workers of the area objected to the unloading of goods at the Elamakkara godown of the firm by the card-holding laborers of the firm. This is a routine job for the 11 card-holding laborers of the company. But suddenly, CITU workers of the area has decided it is not so. They demanded nokkukooli for the job done by the firm's employees.
Nokkukooli is an obnoxious trade union practice prevailing in Kerala in which the consignee or the employer have to pay wages to the head-load workers for work done by others. It is an extortionist practice supported even by various political parties in the state. Though major political leaders have voiced their opposition to this practice, this incident shows it is still very much around.
On the one hand politicians are claiming that State's trade union practices have improved, but the truth is otherwise. Without rooting out such anti-people trade union practices, Kerala can't hope for any improvement on the industrial front.
