India will be celebrating its 62nd Republic day on Jan 26 this year. Highlights include the Presidents address to the Nation and the colorful march past by the Indian armed forces. Indonesian president will be the chief guest at the celebrations.

India will be celebrating its 62nd Republic Day on 26th Jan this year. The importance of Republic Day is that it is on this day in 1950 Constitution of India came into force, and thus India became a sovereign Republic. Republic Day celebrations are marked by an address by the President of India to the Nation. A recurring theme of the speech is a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defense of sovereignty of their country. The president will also dwell on the National Security situation, economy, social welfare, corruption, social welfare, employment generation and poverty alleviation.
Every year India invites a foreign dignitary to be the chief guest at the celebrations. The honour of being the chief guest in India Republic Day is accorded by the government to countries with whom New Delhi wants to have a special relationship . This year the honor falls on the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. India's bilateral with Indonesia will be surpassing the target of $10 billion this year. New Delhi is looking to start negotiations with Indonesia for a trade agreement - The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).Republic Day Celebrations
The events start with the prime minister visiting the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate, where he places a floral wreath at the memorial, followed by the observance of a two-minute silence in honor of unknown soldiers. After this he will join the other dignitaries at the main dais at the Rajpath. Then the unfurling of National Tricolor will take place, in the backdrop of the National Anthem and a 21-gun salute is given. After this, the President will present important awards like Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, followed by a march past by the armed forces. This parade will start from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan, proceed along Rajpath, via the India Gate on to the Red Fort.
The President, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, will take salute from the various regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. There will be pageants of floats exhibiting the cultural diversities of different States, and the entire parade will be broadcast live on television and radio. National Bravery Awards will be distributed to children from various states for exemplary display of courage. The parade ends with an air show by jets of Indian Air Force.
Celebrations will be also organized in State capitals where Governors of States will unfurl the National Flag. There will be colorful parades by school children, and various units of state police force. Chief Minister and other important ministers will address the people, and there will be extensive coverage in the media.
There will be also celebrations at District headquarters. The occasion will be marked by colorful pageants by school children. Important ministers will address the meeting, and will make patriotic speeches to remind people of the courageous sacrifices made by our soldiers in defense of our Mother Land.
