GATE 2011 - M- Tech Admission - Percentile calculation of GATE Exam
Valid GATE Scores are used for M-Tech admission, but few know how to calculate the percentile score in the GATE exam. Percentage and Percentile are different, percentile is a relative term. If you score 50 out of hundred then your percentage marks is 50%, but what is you r percentile. Percentile is more dependents on something else. More than the marks it depends on what Rank you have scored
We will have a look at how the percentile is calculated in the GATE Exam
Say for example a total of hundreds candidates appeared for GATE Exam in your respective discipline
Then
N-number of Candidates appeared for GATE (in your discipline)
R- Your Rank in the GATE Exam, (depending on marks you scored you will have a rank)
P-Percentile
P=( (N-R)/N ) x 100
Difference between N and R (N-R) indicates the number of candidates have lees Marks than you in the GATE Exam
Example
In GATE Exam 2011, a total of 50000 appeared in Electrical and Electronics, and a guy named X got All India Rank (AIR) 256.( That is there are 50000-256 candidates scored lees than him)
Here
N=50000
R=256
P=?
P=( (N-R)/N ) x 100
P=( (50000-256)/50000) x 100
=( 49744/50000) x 100
=(0.99488) x 100
=99.488
So X has a percentile of 99.488
You might know that the GATE Score is valid for two years, to unify these scores of two year the method of Percentile is used. There will be difference in the GATE Exam of different years, if the avg marks scored in year 2010 is high compared toGATE exam 2011. The guy wrote exam in 2011 will have less marks compared to the candidate appeared in 2010. The method of Percentile comes handy in this situation
Percentile depends not on the marks you have scored but the rank you have secured in the respective GATE exams.
If X appeared GATE 2010 and Y in 2011
2010 GATE Exams
Total Candidate appeared N-50000
Marks Scored By X- 64
All India Rank Secured R-656
Percentile P is equal to 98.688
2011 GATE Exams
Total Candidate appeared N -50500
Marks Scored By Y- 50
All India Rank Secured R -600
Percentile P is equal to 98.81
Looking at the percentile you can see that there is no much role for marks, But the AIR is what matters.
Y will have a definite Edge over X who has scored more than Y
