Viruttanam
This is about a famous and revered temple near Pattambi.
This is a village near to Pattambi about 10 km, Shoranur about 15kms, Wadakkancheri 15 kms. It is a predominantly agricultural and residential village. Viruttanam, (PO) Peringannur - PIN - 679535, Via Peringode, Thirumittakode Panchayath, Palakkad.
The most important thing about the village is its Bhagavathi Temple. The deity is Kaali. This goddess is supposed to be same as that of Kodungallur Bhagavathi. The priests of this temple and Kodungallur temple are kiths and kins and they go from one temple to the other during festivals when more priests are required. This temple is very famous in all villages and places all around Viruttanam.
The temple celebrates every year ten day festival known as Vela, This festival gives the pride of place to regional folk art forms. Especially important are the sixth and the eighth days. During the Vela period, folk artists like theyyam, pootham, naayaadi etc go around so many villages as far as 10 km radius. On the sixth evening, about ten caparisoned elephants arrive from different parts of the village and assemble in the temple courtyard. Various art forms like Kaalavela, Kuthiravela, theyyam, pootham, naayaadi etc are presented by the artists in the temple compound. Poraattukali and Kumbhamthullal (pot dance) are presented on the eighth day. As part of the cultural fare, temple art forms like Chakyarkoothu, Kathakali, Ottanthullal, etc., are also performed from recent times.
