In a group A World Cup match Sri Lanka defeated Kenya by nine wickets at R Premadasa Stadium. Malinga dismissed the Kenyans for 142 and had the figures of 6-38. This is Malinga's second World Cup hat-trick. The first hat-trick was his 4 wickets in 4 balls against South Africa in 2007.
