City Of God is the comeback of the two young superstars together. Yes, we are saying about the most wanted young superstars of the Malayalam Film Industry-Prithviraj and Indrajith. Prithviraj is now the hottest sensational hero of Mollywood while Indrajith also proved his mettle with meaty characters in his career. They are last appeared in Viji Thambi's Nammal Thammil. Before that they appeared together in Classmates and Police. City of God is directed by Lijo Jose Pellisery, the son of Late Jose Pellissery. His first film Nayakan with Indrajith as the hero has got many acclaims from the critics for its different takings and narration. Yet, the film didn't do well at the Box Office. So, Lijo is a bit careful for his new film City of God which has got high expectation from the film lovers.
Along with Prithviraj and Indrajith, the film has a high star cast. There are three heroines in the film Swetha Menon, Rima Kallingal and Parvathi Menon(Flash and Notebook Fame). The film has many specialties including its story narration and its camera takings. The film presented in a way that many interlinked incidents in the lives of different peoples collapses in a later time leads to the climax. We know, this is the new narration style in Mollywood which we seen in films like Traffic. City Of God therefore creates a high expectation in the minds of real cinema lovers. Another specialty is with the Cinematography done by Sujith Vasudev. He used a handheld Camera for the film which can give us a new feeling all through the reels.Story of City of God

City Of God Malayalam Movie Review

City Of God is the film everyone was looking for, because of its star cast and director. As the film released on April 23 for the Easter weekend, now we have to analyze whether the film live up to the expectation. The director's attempt to made this film needs appreciation. He tried to experiment with the narration and parallel way of telling the story. But this seems to be the new kind of experiment in Mollywood because we witnessed such themes in movies like Traffic, The Metro etc. But unless the movie has a strong entertainment factor, it fails to catch the audience even if its presentation and packaging is fresh. The same factor also true for the verdict of City Of God. Lijo's previous attempt Nayakan was a different kind of offering to the cine lovers. The packaging of the film when it released had its own credits, but the film ended as a flopper in the box office.
City Of God surely going to repeat the history of Nayakan. The movie is quiet different from the regular Mollwood flicks. We can find many departments in which the film excelling. It is also easy to find the flaws in the film. But the positives outweighs the negatives in case of City of God. Coming to the performances, all the stars in the film came with a good performance. The film has many many characters and each have their own importance which made the film an engrossing one. The main actors list includes Indrajith, Parvathy Menon, Prithviraj, Swetha Menon, Rima Kallingal, Rohini, Anil Murali, Lalu Alex, Fahadh Fazil and a new comer as the friend of Prithviraj. If there is a question that who is the stealer of the show in this film- my answer is Parvathy Menon and then Indrajith. After her worst Performance in Flash(but, a good start in Notebook), she got a character that has full potential to open her acting talent. She cleverly used it and shines as Parimalam. Indrajith as Velu(Swarnavel) also coming with a natural acting. His mannerisms and looking as the typical tamilan character is awesome. To the end of the film, we would have an attachment with their characters. Prithviraj(Jyothylal) also excelled in his character that offered only limited screen space for him . Other heroines Swetha Menon as Viji Punnoos and Rima Kallingal as Sooryaprabha did thier roles well. We cant compare the performances of supporting cats since they all did their job easily and makes the film a fresh piece, but Anil Murali, Rohini and the actor who played the sponsor of Jyothilal(Prithviraj) needs special mention.
The songs are well suited to the mood of the film, but the music is only average. The sets created by Art Director Saloo K.George and crisp editing of Manoj reminds us the well-made Tamil Movies. Sujith Vasudev's Cinematography also needs special appreciation. The script of Babu Janardhanan is fair and he succeeded in working the parallel story telling in a great way.
Up to now, we did not mention a single bad aspect in the film. This is because, to a true film lover(maybe I am), it is hard to find negatives in these types of great attempt. But for a normal viewer who regularly looking for an entertainment film which has the right mixture of all Masala ingredients, can easily figure out a list of negatives. The list will have narration and story telling as the first entry followed by direction and script. Verdict of City of God
City of God is another experimental film in Mollywood which can offer you a fresh air in its presentation. But it is the same reason that makes the film 'Not Everyone's Cup of Tea'.
