Government of kerala - Left Democratic Front LDF


The government in Kerala took a strong for the ban of endosulfan in kerala and worldwide. Achuthanandan government made their intentions clear when they asked the Central government to support global ban on Endosulfan pesticide at the Stockholm Convention held from april 25. Kerala government took effort to convince India regarding the environment pollution and serious health problems caused by the pesticide. Cheif minister V S Achuthanandan said that the attitude of UPA government to implent a ban after complete study of the situation had no point in it. In Kerala when protests were going on against the attitude of central government and Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar,Environment minister Jairam Ramesh the state leadership of the Kerala Congress opted for a defensive mode as the people of Kerala demanded for a complete ban of Endosulfan. Eventhough congress was with the agitations for the ban of endosulfan, Center's stand made them difficult to face public. Even then Leader of the Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said that United Democratic Front's (UDF) stance on Endosulfan will not change in the wake of the Union Agriculture Ministry deciding against imposing a ban on the pesticide .They also came strongly against the LDF, pointing out that it has failed to implement the ban on the harmful pesticide. They also pointed out that during UDF government's rule, a complete ban was imposed on the use of endosulfan in the State, but the LDF government failed to implement and execute it in the state thereafter. But union minister came with criticised pro endosulfan attitude. Later party admitted that the statement was improper when it came under severe attack by the KPCC members. Congress leaders like Ramesh chennithala, MM Hassan, R. Balakrishna Pillai corrected K.V thomas's statement in their public meetings. UDF representatives was a part of an all-party delegation that headed to New Delhi to exert pressure on the Centre to consider supporting a global ban on Endosulfan at the Stockholm Convention. But an opposition party is always an opposition to the ruling body in Kerala. Oomen Chandy said that the LDF government was tring to make an impression that they were doing every thing for the people in last one week. He continued that LDF have done nothing against endosulphan but it was their previous UDF government that requested the UPA government in 2005 for a ban on endosulfan Which LDF government failed to implement. UDF promised that they will not allow the ban of 2006 to be compromised in any manner. UDF also did not failed to make mockery of the hartal conducted by LDF by saying that it was a rehearsal to organise many more hartals in the future, when it is almost sure that UDF wil come to power quite soon.

Bharatiya Janata Party


The Bharatiya Janata Party launched programmes for total elimination of endosulfan from India. BJP Kerala State president V. Muraleedharan said that even though a ban for Endosulfan was achieved in Stockholm Convention at Geneva for elimination of the pesticide worldwide, exemption obtained india have to be dealt strongly for a better cause in the country. Exemption for 16 crops will cause the harmful pesticide to be used in various parts of India in the coming ten years. As a total ban on the use of the pesticide in India did'nt happened, BJP leader Muralidharan said that people should rise their voice to suppress the political powers. BJP organised a 'people's protest' against Endosulfan in the capital Thiruvananthapuram on May 3. The BJP said that the party suppports a nation-wide ban on the pesticide, endosulfan. BJP also appreciated Kerala for it's spirited protest against deadly endosulfan. Leader of opposition in loksabha, sushama swaraj assured that BJP will stand along with the people in Kasaragod district who are suffering due to the ill-effects of the pesticide .BJP took part in the 'endosulfan fast' for the sake of ban of endosulfan.

Muslim League


Muslim League Kerala State Committee demanded the Central and State governments for a nationwide ban of pesticide endosulfan. Kerala muslim League also organised various programmes against the pestscide endosulfan. IUML State secretary M.K. Muneer inaugurated the programme conducted by the workers of the Youth Congress demanding nationwide ban on Endosulfan. The Muslim Students Federation (MSF) also organised a protest in calicut city. Muslim league conveyed their concern regarding the suffering people, resulted from the use of endosulfan. They also said that no futher study in this regard is required as it is all evident from the past years. Muslim League State President Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal ,National IUML President and Union minister of state for railways E Ahamed, State General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty stated that pesticides which is disatrous to human race must be abolished. IUML also supported UDF for their opinion that LDF is utilizing endosulfan for political mileage.

Collective effort from various political parties created a resonating atmosphere for the ban of endosulfan in kerala. Let us hope that endosulfan will be completely banned from our state very soon.
