Mar George Alencherry was born on 19 April 1945 at Thuruthy in Kottayam District. Mar George Alencherry has completed his BA economics degree from Kerala university. He was a second rank holder of Kerala university in the year 1965. He joined seminary on 1972 to become priest. Mar George Alencherry has also completed his master degree in Theology and was a first rank holder from the Pontifical Theological Institute, Alwaye. He has also took doctorate in Theology from Sorbonne University on 1986.

Mar George Alencherry served as a Director of Catechetics from 1976 to 1978. He also served as Deputy Secretary of KCBC, Director of the Pastoral Orientation Centre at Palarivattam, professor at Paurastya vidyapitham and Protosyncellus of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry. When Thuckalay was formed from Changanacherry Mar George Alencherry became the Bishop of Thuckalay on 2 February 1997.

At present Mar George Alencherry is a Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop. He was officially declared as Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop on 26 May 2011. He was selected through voting by 46 bishops. Mar George Alencherry also became the first person to selected by church itself for selecting archbishop as earlier they were selected directly by the Vatican.
