The name Google is known to everybody who knows something about the inter- net as a rich source of information. It is the most popular Search Engine. There is an interesting story behind the name Google. It is a story of a spelling mistake.
Larry Page and Sergey Brinare, the creators of Google, had different names in their mind for their product. In the beginning they created a software system called Back Rub using which it was possible to get a list of results based on the popularity of the pages. Soon they realised that the most popular one need not be the most informative or useful they improved upon it. The improved one was first started its functioning in a website of Stanford University.
Later they thought of changing the name and chose GOOGOL. This is a word indicating a number 'one followed by hundred zeros'. But they, by mistake (perhaps they might not have looked for correct spelling), used the spelling as 'GOOGLE' and got registered with this spelling. It was easily accepted by everybody and became popular.
By the time they knew the mistake in the spelling the registration was over and had become almost popular. So they did not bother changing the name. Thus the 'correct' site became www.google.com. Now nobody bothers about the spelling. The name got established in the minds everybody who are familiar with computers and internet.
