Gopinath Muthukad is a well-known magician as well as an illusionist who hails from the state of Kerala in India. He is famous especially in Kerala for his renowned works in magic. So deep is his passion for magic that he even stopped his lawyer's course halfway to achieve a career as a magician. The first magic academy in Asia for obtaining scientific and systematic learning in the magical art was set up by Gopinath Muthukad. This academy has been set up in the year 1996 in the Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala. Recently this year (2011), Muthukad was selected for the Merlin Award which is equivalent to an Oscar award in the field of magic. Not only was he selected for the prestigious award, but he also won the award bringing a lot of pride to the state of Kerala too. It is through such talented people that the state also receives a lot of recognition. The Merlin Award is organised by the world's largest US based magician's organisation called the International Magician's Society. Thus, it is a great achievement for Gopinath Muthukad to have won the much desired Merlin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Magic. This award has raised Muthukad to a high level and has placed him in the same league as other celebrated names like David Copperfield and Franz Harary. Gopinath Muthukad hails from a small village called Kavalamukkatta near Nilambur in Malappuram district of Kerala. He was born on April 10th, 1964 to Kunjunni and Devaki Amma who were farmers. Muthukad is married to Kavitha Muthukad and the couple has one son named Vismay Muthukad(the meaning of Vismay is surprise). Other than the recent international award, Muthukad has previously won an award at the state level known as Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy award in 1995. It was the first ever award for magic instituted in Kerala. His debut on the stage as a magician was at the tender age of 10. After this debut performance itself, he began to be noted for his unique styles of presenting magic. Muthukad has completed his graduation in Mathematics from N.S.S College, Manjeri and it was while studying for law that he discontinued it in between and decided to take up magic as a career.Gopinath Muthukad's national integration magic shows

These shows were performed as voyages meaning that they were performed in many parts of India according to the theme of the show.
1. Vismaya Bharatha Yathra was a show meant to develop a good sense of national unity even in the midst of diversity for entire India from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. This show was performed by road through 22 states in India. This magic show was performed from 15th August to 31st October 2002.
2. Gandhi Mantra was to educate people about seven noted messages that were taught by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. This show was also performed in 22 states and one Union Territory. This show was performed from 2nd October to 26th January 2005.
3. Vismaya Swaraj Yatra was a show which was strongly supported by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and the Ministry of Defence. For this show, Muthukad and his team of magicians toured all the complete geographical boundaries of India (Kanyakumari to Kashmir) on a bus and lorry. It was a show dedicated as a tribute to the great Indian soldiers and freedom fighters who sacrificed their life for the peace of the country and its citizens. It was through this magic show that the team of magicians taught the people of the nation about the lives, sacrifices and messages of the great soldiers like Bhagat Singh, Mangal Pandey etc. This show was performed from 2nd October to 30th November 2007. On 5th November, Magician Muthukad and his team of magicians set the world record by staging the Indo-China friendship magic show at Nathu La Sikkim. Nathu La Sikkim is a historical trade region which lies high up at 14400 feet in the Himalayas. The team really deserved this record as it was achieved with a lot of effort and determination by fighting off the climatic troubles that occur while climbing up such a high peak. This record has also acquired Muthukad a lot of praise and appreciation from the national leaders of India such as Dr Manmohan Singh and Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
4. His latest magic show is called Mission India and it focuses on a major issue that the country and the world itself is facing nowadays which is terrorism and violence. It is a 60 days voyage. This magic show has also been supported by the Ministry of Defence to try out all possible ways to curb terrorism and violence. As the Taj Hotel in Mumbai was recently attacked viciously by the terrorists few years back, the Mission India magic show started off the voyage with a painful curtain raiser on the terrace of the hotel. Gopinath Muthukad was also the chief organizer of 'Mazma', the first ever festival of traditional street magicians of India held in Thiruvananthapuram during 10th and 11th of December 2005. He has also been the chief organizer for many international magic festivals. He is also noted for his campaigns against social evils such as tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse. Muthukad's latest edition in the magical world is termed as Muthukad's World of Magic, he has moved out from the national level to the global level. The new magic entertainment show has been formed to reach out to the public on an international level. Even through all this fame and recognition, Muthukad still remains as a very humble and down-to-earth person who is not too proud of his achievements and is ever ready to help his peers and subordinates in the field of magic by parting his magical knowledge with them. Gopinath Muthukad is also an excellent writer and has written the first ever book on Magic in Malayalam language titled as 'Magic-What?How?'. He is the first magician to give a magical performance based on the autobiographical book of President, Dr A.PJ Abdul Kalam titled Wings of Fire. Muthukad is also the editor of Vismayam Magical News which is a monthly edition meant for printing all news about the world of magic. In 1999, he wrote Ganitharamante Kusruthikal, a book based on Math-magic. All his books have been published and are in great demand.
