Census 2011 and results related to Kerala


Every tenth year Census is taken in India. Details about the population are collected through this. Population growth, sex-ratio, literacy rates, population density,socio-economics and other details needed for the day to-day administration are gathered through this laborious exercise. Here under are certain details of 2011 census.

As per the preliminary reports from the Directorate of Census the population of Kerala at the 'zero hours' of March 1, 2011 is 3,33,87,677, that is more than 3.3 crores. Out of this 1,60,21,290 are males and 1,73,66,387 are females. When the last census was taken in 2001 these figures were respectively 3,18,41,374 total, 1,54,68,614 males and 1,63,72,760 females.

The growth rate of Kerala's population during the last ten years is 4.86% , one of the lowest rates. This was 9.43% during the decade ending 2001. The national rate of growth during the last ten years is 17.64%. The previous decade's rate was 21.54% for the nation.

It is interesting to note that the growth rates reported for the two districts in Kerala, viz. Pathanamthitta and Idukki are negative. That means population has decreased by 3.12% in Pathanamthitta and by 1.93% in Idukki district.

The trend of population growth in the State shows a steady decline. In 1971 the rate was more than 25%. As per this trend the coming decade may mark a negative growth rate for the State.

District-wise the population at Malappuram is showing the highest figure, 41,10,956, which is 12.31% of the State's population. The lowest figure 8,16,538 is reported from Wynad. The growth rate is also maximum (13.39%) in Malappuram district during the last decade.

Coming to literary rates, Kerala still leads the States in the nation with 93.91% (leaving out the children below six years). In the last census the rate was 90.86%. Among the districts Pathanamthitta tops with 96.93% . Kottayam (96.40%) and Alappuzha(96.26%) are very close by. The Capital district Trivandrum is having 92.66% literacy. Palakkad district comes in the bottom level with 88.49%.

Here it is to be noted that there are two districts in Mizoram, Sechhip dustrict (98.76%) and Aizawl district (98.50%), having highest literary rates. Sex-wise differences exist in the literary rates. While 96.02 % of men are literate only 91.98% women are literate. In the last senses the rates were 94.24 and 87.72 % respectively. From these figures it is clear that women population gain literacy faster than men.

When it comes to the sex ratio in population Kerala is having the highest, 1084 women for 1000 men. This was 1058 during the last census. The all India figures are 933 and 940 respectively for the 2001 and 2011 census. District-wise in Kerala Kannur district tops the list with 1133 women for 1000 men, while the lowest is reported from Idukki district (1006). The sex ratio of children below age six is 959. In the number of children a decrease of 12.41 % is recorded during the decade ended. The sex ratio of children in the previous census was 960. In India the rate is 914.

Density of population per sq. km. is 859 in Kerala while that in India is 382 only. Thiruvananthapuram district tops with 1,509 persons and Idukki the lowest with 254 persons. The children belonging to the age group of 0 to 6 is least in the Pathanamthitta district (7.65%). the State's figure is 33,22,247 (9.95% of the total population).
