Know the rules of the road

Roads, being a public place, will be used by vehicles (whether small or large), cyclists, pedestrians and even animals. As such, there must have a rule to be observed on roads. One must be patient enough to follow these rules for the safety of, not only him but for others too

These rules are shown on roads, either as signal boards or markings on roads. A driver should have an idea about the drawings and marking made on the roads and it's meaning.

The road signals are divided into 3 types

Mandatory or Regulatory signals
These signals are used to inform road users about some restrictions and regulations to be observed for the smooth and free flow of traffic, violation of which are considered as legal offense.

Cautionary or warning signals
These signals are used to give information about existing hazardous condition of roads and sideways.

Informatory signals
These are used to guide road users about public utility areas like hospital, restaurant, petrol pumps etc.

Hand signals

These are signals shown by various movements of hands. There are two types of hand signals.
Hand signals shown by Traffic policemen on traffic islands: Traffic policemen at traffic junction use hand signals to control traffic, where there is no automatic signal lamps, and are meant to ensure smooth and safe flow of traffic to and from all sides.
Hand signals shown by drivers: These are the signals shown by drivers of moving vehicles. The intention of these signals are to inform other vehicles about the action which he is about to execute. Hand signals are very much important for two wheelers including cyclists. The signals should be shown in a manner which can attract the attention of others vehicles.

Various hand signals

There are five signals can be shown by right hand of the driver. They are:
Right turn: Stretch out full hand. Keep it straight and palm face forward
Left turn: Keep right hand as above and rotate anticlockwise.
Permitting to overtake: Stretch out right hand and wave it to and fro.
Slowing down: Stretch out right hand. Raise hand up and down.
Stopping: Stretch out right hand. Raise forearm upward, while the vehicle stops.
