Ranjan Mathai will be the foreign secretary of India from 1 August 2011 onwards. Till then he will be the ambassador of India in France. It will be a proud moment for all Malayalees as the native place of Ranjan Mathai is Mavelikara located in Kerala state of India. But he did his educations in Poona as his father was teaching at the NDA. His mother Sara, who hails from Puthuppally a place in Kottayam district of Kerala, was a teacher.
Ranjan Mathai entered the Indian Foreign Service or IFS in the year 1974. He occupied several important positions in the Indian Foreign Service ministry. He served in the Indian embassies of Tehran, Brussels, Vienna, Colombo, Washington etc. This popular person also worked as the joint secretary in the ministry of external affairs New Delhi. This was from 1995 January to 1998 February. Taking into consideration Myanmar, Srilanka, Bangladesh & Maldives, Mr Ranjan Mathai also headed the division that was dealing with India's relationship with those countries. From 1998 February-2001 June & 2001 August-2005 July, Mr Ranjan Mathai was the Indian ambassador to Israel & Qatar respectively. From 2005 August-2007 January, Mr Ranjan Mathai was the Deputy high commissioner of India in UK.
Among the different Malayalees who occupied higher positions in the Indian Foreign Service, Mr Ranjan Mathai is considered to be the 7th Malayalee. The other Malayalees were Nirupama Rao, N .R .Pillai, K. P. S. Menon, K .P. S .Menon Junior, J. N. Dikshit & Sivashankar Menon. So his appointment as the foreign secretary of India by ACC (Appointments Committee Of Cabinet) is really a good news for all Malayalees. As a foreign secretary Mr Ranjan Mathai have to face certain uncertainity situations with some neighbouring countries.
