The arts and games as part of Onam celebration
Onam is festival of prosperity and which is celebrated for a period of ten days, starting from the first day Atham, the day in the Malayalam month Chingam, to Thiruvonam. Lot of celebrations and games are organized along the Kerala for these days. During these days peoples wearing new dresses, and arranging lot of functions in offices and other public places. As part of this celebration peoples organized some of traditional dances along the Kerala, some of them are mentioned below:-
Kathakali: A traditional and classical dance of Kerala, which is the body movements of a person who make up with attractive colors, wearing most colorful dresses and also wearing the crown. In which the dancer moving his or her body in the presence of playback music. Kathakali is the most attractive part of Onam celebration.
Kummattikali: This is the famous colorful mask-dance of Kerala, during the festival of Onam, Kummattikali performers visiting each house and performing their dance before them and the house owners giving gifts to kummatti.
Kaikottikali: This is the most traditional dance, in which dancers dancing with clapping their hands and also singing loudly. But now these days this traditional dance is disappeared from most part of the Kerala.
Thiruvathirakali: This the traditional dance of Hindu women, in which the dancers wearing set sari and wearing the jasmine flowers on their hair also dancing and singing themselves.
Thumbithullal: This is folk art, which was performed with Onam festival, in which about more than six women sitting on the floor in the form of a circle they are clapping and singing loudly. But now these days this art is disappear from this state, we can see it rarely on carnival which is organized as a part of Onam festival.
Pulikkali: This is the traditional folk art of kerala, we can see this art along the Kerala during the Onam season, in which the peoples paint their body like a tiger and also fitting a tail. They are dancing with the playback music and moving through the road from one place to another.
As part of Onam celebrations peoples organized lot of games along the cities and villages of the Kerala some of Onam games are thalappanthukali, Vallam kali, Kabadi, Kayyankali etc. During onam season people organized the competition of Pookkalam making all along the cities and villages in Kerala, in offices and public places this competition is a passion now these days. As part of Onam festival, in Thripunithura , the peoples organized lot of celebrations on the first day Attam called 'Attachamayam' in which we can see lot arts and folk dances and other items, it is most attractive and one of the largest Onam celebration in Kerala.
