Cathode ray Tube Display System was the most widely used display system in television and computer monitors till the launch of Liquid Crystal Dispaly or LCD. CRT works on the principle of Thermionic valves.This display system was not so strong and requires high power for working. It was also dangerous to work with crt display. So it didnt take much time for Solid State Display technologies such as Liquid Crystal Displays to take over the scene. This type of portable display systems created much changes in the display systems. It showed pictures and videos with better clarity and consumed less power.
Now LCD screens are present in mobile phones,computer monitors,television and other portable device's display system. The same technology used in LCD is modified recently to make a new display system which is flexible and can be made in the form of e-papers. LCD is always better than CRT display systems. But they also have some problems when the portability factor is taken into consideration. It requires power for display creation,retention and refreshing. So it consumes more electricity which is a draw back to the portable systems working on this display technique. It reduces the battery life of the portable devices thus making it unefficient. About half of the power from the battery is used for display purpose. Reflex LCD stands ahead of ordinary LCD technology in many ways. It is also important to note that the thickness of the Reflex display systems are very small and are flexible.It is made of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals and images are produced from the reflected light from them. There is no need of electricity to retain such images. Electricity is only required to erase and reproduce new images there. So we can consider it as a zero power system. This is due to the special property of the Cholesteric Liquid Crystals to remain in bistable states: Bright Reflecting State or Non-Bright reflecting State. There are Reflex LCDs which can retain the image for around 10 years without using electricity. This type of display systems is promoted in e-readers and hand held GPS recievers.
Reflex LCDs also helps in preparing e-news papers and creating paper free classrooms. E-slates which can be used to write and erase for about 50,000 times with the help of only one button cell are available in the market. This is possible only because of the arrival of Reflex LCDs.
