Kerala is all set to celebrate the centenery of its greatest romantic poet, Changampuzha Krishnapillai. Changampuzha, one of the most well known poet in Malayalam opened a new path in Malayalam literature. Perhaps, only Kunjan Nambiar is equally or more famous poet than him. When Kunchan Nambiar, who lived 200 years before Changampuzha, was an exponent of humour and satirical elements, he was famous for his use of pure lyricis and imageries.

Changampuzha was born in a poor family on 11 October 1911 to Thekedath Narayana Menon and Changampuzha Parukkutty Amma. He had primary education there in Edappally. He completed school education from Malayalam Primary School, Edappally, Sreekrishnavilasam English Medium School, St. Mary's School, Alwaye and St. Albert's School, Ernakulam. Then he earned honors degree after the education at Maharajas College, Ernakulam and Arts College, Trivandrum. Before the education got completed, he married Sreedevi Amma. Because of the dogging poverty, he went to war service but resigned after two years. Though joined Law college in Madras then, he could not complete due to lack of money. By that time, he had become a famous poet. He then worked as the editor of 'Mangalodayam' magazine and continued his writing. At the age of 36, death came to him in the form of tuberculosis and on 17 July 1948, he bid adieu to the world at Mangalodayam nursing home in Thrissur. He has 'Changampuzha Memorial Library' and 'Changampuzha Park', two instituitions in Edappally, formed in memory of him.

Literary Scene

Changampuzha had started writing poems as earlier in his childhood. He was much inspired by the western poets Shelley and Keats to name. He also used to win prizes in competitions. His first volume of poems was 'Bashpanjali' in 1934. Amidst the college life, he met Raghavan Pillai, another poet from Edappally. They paved a new path in poetry and were combinely called 'Edappally Poets'. They were hailed as the 'Shelley and Keats' of Malayalam. Soon Edappally expired and this led Changampuzha into deep agony. His most famous work 'Ramanan', the pastoral elegy sold over one lakh copies, was born from this incident. 'Ramanan' was published in 1936. It's more of a drama in verse. His another poem 'Vazhakkula' was a strong protest against the feudalism and imperialism prevailing then. He portrayed the plight of a poor farmer in the poem.
Changampuzha poems had a strong love of nature. He used to create imageries of landscapes, rivers and valleys of Kerala. He also protested against the feuds and exploiters through his poems but it were overshadowed by the beauty of his language. He enjoyed a ever widening circle of readers. Even now, Changampuzha hasn't had a suitable follower yet.
