M. T Vasudevan Nair is a famous Indian writer in Malayalam who also had written many screenplays for films. Most recently the legend writer won the Ezhuthachan award 2011 from the Kerala state government. Ezhuthachan award will be given to M. T. Biography of M. T. Vasudevan Nair


M. T. Vasudevan Nair was born in the year 1933 on July 15th at Kudallur, a village at Palakkad district. With his versatile writing skills he took a valuable space in Malayalam literature. His pen name in Malayalam literature is MT. He maintained the respected positions like president of Kerala Sahithya Academy and chairman of Thunchan Memorial Trust. He formerly was a journalist at Mathrubhumi and became the chief editor later. His wife is Kalamandalam Saraswathi who was a dancer. He has a daughter.

In the beginning, when he was in youth M.T. short stories were published in several magazines. His first volume of short stories was published in 1952. His first novel ‘Naalukettu' in 1958, itself brought a new trend in novel writing and achieved a huge readership. M.T's writing brought a positive change to Malayalam literature that his works are so eminent to rise up Malayalam literature to more heights.

His novels, short stories and screenplays are written with pure classical touch and have romance, innocence, nature, emotions and all that a human wants to pleasure – up his mind.

He tell stories with characters in the society who were suffering and struggling in the society. He also wrote stories of historical characters. Chandu, the anti – hero of folk story ‘Vadakkan Pattu' was really a hated figure among Malayalees. But after the film ‘Oru Vadakkan Veeraghada', Chandhu got a hero image in the mind of Malayalees. It was possible only because the writing magic of M. T who scripted for the film. Mammootty performed the role of Chandhu and made it alive.

Awards for M. T. cannot be listed within a few words. That much he was honoured for his magical writing. Here I listed the major awards which M.T won. MT was honored by Indian Government by the greatest literary award "Jyanapeedam" in the year 1995 for the work 'Randamoozham' in Malayalam. He was also honored by Padma Bhushan in the year 2005. M T was honored by Calicut University by giving Honorary Doctorate in the year 1996. He got Kendra Sahithya Academy award for his novel Kaalam. He got Odakuzhal award for Vanaprastham. He won Kerala Sahitya Academy awards for his Novel Naalukettu in the year 1958. He also won the same award for his Drama Gopura Nadayil in 1982 and for his short story Swargam Thurakkunna Samayam in the year 1986 respectively.

He got many national and state awards for his screenplays. He got national film awards for the films – Iruttinte Athmavu, Nirmalyam, Parinayam, Oru Cheru Punchiri, Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, Kadavu, Sadhayam. He also got Vayalar Rama Varma award for Randamoozham.

He won Kerala state film awards for the films – Olavum Theeravum, Nirmalyam,Bandhanam, Oppol, Thrishna, Valarthu Mrigangal, Aaroodam, Anubandham, Panchagni, Nakshatrangal, Amritham gamaya, Perumthanchan, Sukritham, Daya, Oru cheru Punchiri, Pazhassi Raja. M T Vasudevan Nair got the best life- time achievement award from Asianet in the year 2003. Other award he won are Muttathu Varkey award.
