The Aakash tablet has been officially launched in India. It is yet to hit the Kerala markets. Aakash Tabletis the low cost tablet computer developed by the London based company DataWind jointly with the Indian Institute of Technology. Its commercial production was done by Quad, an Indian company. The tablet was officially launched on Oct 5, 2011 in the name Aakash, which means Sky in Hindi. A revised second generation model with substantial changes is on the way of production in early 2012. The Aakash tablet is the cheapest tablet in the world. It is a part of the E-learning programme of India that is supposed to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities that extends to Kerala also. The project is developed as an alternative to the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) programme. The tablet has not been yet started to be marketed.

Features of Aakash Tablet PC


The tablet features a seven inch touch screen. It has got a RAM of256 megabytes. The tablet uses an ARM 11 processor with the Android 2.2 operating system. There are two USB ports on the tablet. Aakash delivers the videos in HD quality. The application of the site Getjar, a proprietary market, has been facilitated in it. The required applications can be easily downloaded thus. It was intially planned as a '$35 laptop'. But the inflation resulted in a raise of price. Aakash will be sold to the Government of India at the price of $50 and will be distributed to the students at a government subsidized price of $35. The students of IIM and NIT in Kerala will have the oppurtunity to get the tablet. A commercial version will be launched with the brandname UbiSlate 7 at a price of $60.

Specifications of Aakash Tablet PC


The Aakash tablet has an overall size measuring 190.5 x 118.5 x 15.7 mm with a 7 inch resistive screen. It weighs about 350 grams. The tablet employs the Android 2.2 operating system with access to the proprietary marketplace Getjar instead of the usual Android marketplace. The Getjar application access is developed by Datawind.

The processor is of 366 MHz with Graphics Accelerator and HD Video Co-processor. The tablet has got a 256 MB RAM. It also consists of a Micros SD slot with a 2GB Micro SD card. The memory can be expanded upto 32GB. It includes two full-size USB ports and a 2100 mAh battery. The tablet has been facilitated with Wi-fi connectivity. Since there are only a few places in Kerala with wi-fi connectivity, that feature can't make huge wave here. A browser developed by Datawind itself has been associated in the tablet. There is also an internal cellular and SubscriberIdentity Module (SIM) modem that measures 2 watts of power consumption. The modem has also a solar charging option. Aakash has 3.5mm audio output and input jack with it. It has no built in speakers.
The tablet will support a range of document types including doc, docx, ppt, pptx, xls, xlsx, odt, odf and pdf. The supported image formats are png, jpg, bmp and gif. mp3, aac, ac3, wav and wma are the compatible audio files and whereas video files are mpeg2, mpeg4, avi and flv. The Aakash table also includes an application for the Youtube videos access.

Cost of Aakash Tablet PC in Kerala


The Aakash tablet will be available for a price of $60 (Rs. 3000) in the market. It is yet to be marketed in Kerala and other many states. Most probably, the marketing in Kerala will be in Kochi. The students will get the tablet for a government subsidised price of $35 (Rs. 1750).

The new version of the tablet, Aakash 2 will be launched soon. That will have a new microprocessor of 800 megahertz instead of the present 366 megahertz processor. The new processor will increase the speed of the tablet and solve the current drawbacks like quick overheating, frequent system freeze and poor sound quality. It will also facilitate the support for all formats of data and will help to install free online softwares. The Aakash 2 will also have a built in camera and a 1GB RAM as the highlights. It will also enable users to download videos from Youtube. Aakash-2 will be released by 2012. As a growing IT Hub, Kerala will be among the first markets to cherish the tablet.
