Deepika daily to celebrate its 125th Anniversary
Deepika, the oldest news paper in Malayalam now, set to celebrate its 125th anniversary. The oldest Malayalam newspaper Deepika is all set to celebrate its 125th anniversary in all the splendour. The celebration will see a series of programmes like Media seminars, Exhibitions and Cultural events. The celebrations will kick off on 26th November and last to 28th.
M P Veerendra Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Mathrubhumi daily will inaugurate the media seminar on 26th November. N P Rajendran, Chairman of Kerala Press Academy, K Abubacker, Malayala Manorama Resident Editor and Prof Kuriakose Kumbbalakuzhi would participate in the seminar.
The formal inauguration of the Anniversary celebrations will be carried out by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on 28th November. The function will be presided over by Syro Malabar Sabha Major Archbishop Mar George Alanchery.
Vayalar Ravi, the Civil Aviation and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister will open the jubilee projects of the newspaper. Kerala Finance Minister K M Maani will carry out the felicitation at the function. As a part of the celebrations, Kerala Information and Rural Development Minister K C Joseph will be releasing a book that explores the history of the news paper, 'Deepika- Noottandukalude Vilakku.'
An exhibition that travels through the different periods of the newspaper will be held on 26th November. There will be also a cartoon expo by Raju Nair. A 'Propaganda Campaign Rally' will be held following this. The rally will be inaugurated by Olympian P T Usha. The cultural competitions and other events will take place on 27th. The valedectory function will be held at Kottayam later.
First published on April 15, 1887, Deepika is the oldest news paper Malayalam that is in circulation now. It was initially known as 'Nasrani Deepika' and was headquartered in Kottayam. The name 'Deepika' was adopted later in 1927. It is now under the ownership of Rashtra Deepika Ltd.
The newspaper boasts of six editions in Kottayam, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The other publications of the Rashtra Deepika group include Deepika Balasakhyam, Kuttikalude Deepika, Business Deepika, Children's Digest, Rashtra Deepika Cinema, Streedhanam and Karshakan.
