Chakkulathukavu is a famous Bhagavathy temple in Kerala situated in the border of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga, here called as 'Chakkulathamma'. Chakkulathukavu Bhagavathy temple is a holy place for worshiping, as both the sides of the temple are bordered by rivers Pamba and Manimala. Chakkulathu Devi temple is believed to be there over 3000 years. Along with Goddess Durga there also has idols of Vana Durga (with eight hands), Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ayyapa, Lord Ganapathi, Lord Muruka, Yakshi, Serphent Gods and Navagrahas.

Pongala is the festival of all Goddess temples in Kerala. Chakkulathukavu Pongala is on the Malayalam month of Vrichikam (November- December) every year. It is believed that on this occasion the divinity of Goddess would be on the peak. Pongala is the worship or offering celebrated by the women devotees; at that time there are streams of women devotees in the temple.

Pongala means the food prepared by the women mainly using rice, jaggery and coconut; also called payasam. The food is prepared in a earthen pot. The arrangements for the Pongala festival are arranged by the temple authorities in the surroundings of the temple. The chief Priest of the Chakkulathukavu temple first lights the main hearth for Pongala and after that the light passes one by one to other hearths by devotees. It is said that the holy presence of Chakkulathamma is there while lighting on the main hearth because every year an eagle round on the sky over the main hearth. When Pongala being cooked, all the evils like grief, sorrows, problems, confusions, guilt in the human mind are washed away and the mother Goddess left happiness and blessing to her children. The Pongala Payasam is dedicated fully to Goddess.
