Sree Narayana Guru, the famous spiritual leader and social reformer from Kerala is very popular among the people. We all are familiar with another fact that Sivagiri pilgrimage pays tribute to the contributions made by Sree Narayana Guru. Instead of the term Sivagiri Pilgrimage, malayalees are more familiar with the name Sivagiri Theerthadanam. In simple terms we can say that Sivagiri Theerthadanam is a religious pilgrimage. The aim of Sivagiri Theerthadanam is to create knowledge among people that helps in their prosperity. The 79th Annual Sivagiri Pilgrimage venue is Sivagiri mutt near Varkkala. I think most people are familiar with the place Sivagiri. It's a pilgrimage centre in Kerala where you can find the tomb of Sree Narayana Guru.
In connection with this pilgrimage, the Sivagiri Mutt will host science and technology summit, agriculture-industry meet, women's conclave and literary meet. The Sivagiri pilgrimage programs at the Sivagiri mutt near Varkkala will be inaugurated by the honorable chief minister of Kerala Shri Oommen Chandy on 30 December 2011. But the Sivagiri pilgrimage will be inaugurated by Veerappa Moily(Union Minister for Corporate Affairs) on 31 December 2011. Other ministers, who are expected to be present on the occasion are K. C. Sree Narayana Guru, the prominent religious leader of Kerala was pleased to hear the concept of Theerthadanam from T. K. Kittan Writer and Vallabhasseri Govindan Vaidyar, who were his followers. Sree Narayana Guru insisted that such a pilgrimage should start at the beginning of our European new year that usually falls in the month of Dhanu, which is a Malayalam month. But before such Theerthadanam starts, the pilgrims were asked to observe a 10 day purification process based on body, food, deed, mind as well as word, which are considered to be the principles of Sri Buddha. The goals of Sivagiri Theerthadanam are agriculture, trade, education, cleanliness, handicrafts, organization, technical training and devotion to god respectively. Apart from this, the pilgrims should wear yellow clothes. During the first Sivagiri Theerthadanam, that started in Elavumthitta, the pilgrims recited freedom song written by Kumaran Asan, on their way to Sivagiri. The pilgrims of the first Sivagiri Theerthadanam were S. Sankunni, P. K. Kesavan, P. K. Divakara Panicker, P. V. Raghavan and M. K. Raghavan respectively. Through this pilgrimage, Sree Narayana Guru wanted the pilgrims to overcome the knowledge of darkness so that they can attain spiritual life. Today Sivagiri Theerthadanam is also considered to be an act of honoring the memory of the vision and life of Sree Narayana Guru.
