Biography of Adoor Gopalakrishnan


Adoor Gopalakrishnan was born in Adoor at Pattanamthitta district of Kerala in the year 1941. At childhood itself he was having talents in performing arts because he belongs to a family which have strong link to performing arts especially Kathakali. He started acting in drama at the age of eight. Later he directed over twenty plays, among which most of them were written by him. In 1962 he joined in Pune film & television institute and got graduation in 1965 with diploma in script writing and direction. In the same year itself he founded the 'Chitralekha film society of Trivandrum' and Chitralekha film cooperative'. Both played a major role in development of film culture in Kerala. Through his films Adoor Gopalakrishnan strongly proved that films are not only for entertainment but also for art and cultural development and having some ethical values.

Films and Documentaries of Adoor Gopalakrishnan


Adoor Gopalakrishnan directed his first feature film 'Swayamvaram' in 1972. Swayamvaram was the first new wave film in Malayalam, and it was one of the major steps of Indian new wave cinemas. His first movie Swayamvaram acted by Madhu and Sharadha was very much popular because of the strong story base of the film. Later he directed ten feature films and made over 25 short films and documentaries.

Adoor introduced a new style in film making with meaningful visuals and images for storytelling and giving secondary importance to sounds and special effects. His second film 'Kodiyettam' is a best example for this. Kodiyettam was released in 1977, told the life of a common man – Sankarankutty starring by Bharath Gopi. Adoor Gopalakrishnan presented Sankarankutty in a very simple and realistic way. In Kodiyettam he avoided background music, which is not essential for films. Still Kodiyettam is one of the best films in Malayalam carrying with excellent sound presentation.
Elipathayam (1981), Mukhamukham (1984), Mathilukal (1989), Vidheyan (1993), Nizhalkkuthu (2003), Naalu pennungal (2007), Oru pennum randaanum (2008) are the other movies of Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan tries to visualize common events in a realistic way. Even the minute expressions were revealed through perfect visualization that is the challenge of a director. His films show nature's beauty, sadness, irritation etc. In 'Elipathyam' Adoor documented the feudal life style of Kerala at its twilight. 'Mukhamukham'is based on the political background of Kerala. The rise of a new generation and the study in failed idealism was the theme of Mukhamukham. 'Mathilukal' is the film version of the popular novel 'Mathilukhal' written by Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer. 'Vidheyan', at the same time reveals the cruelty and humbleness of human mind through characters. 'Kadhapurushan' describes the changing strategy of political system of Kerala. 'Nizhalkuthu' tells the story of a hangman and the emotional problems he have to face because of his job. His latest two films 'Naalu pennungal' and 'Oru pennum randaanum' are based on the short stories of writer Thakazhi Sivashankara Pillai.
He directed over 25 short films and documentaries. Some of the them are- The light, A great day, The myth, A day at Kovalam, Yakshagaanam, Krishnanattam etc. Adoor also made many documentaries for different government organizations.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan is also well famous as an author. He wrote two books regarding film making – The world of cinema (Cinemayude lokam) and Experiences of Cinema (Cinemaanubhavam). He won the national award for the book Cinemayude lokam in 1983. He is one of the film makers who strongly claim that film is the art of director. Cinemayude lokam is a very famous book among the public as it helps to know about the secrets and experiments in film making. Adoor Gopalakrishnan's films were screened in many international and national film festivals and also won many awards. In consideration of his great contribution to Indian cinema, Indian government honored Adoor Gopalakrishnan by giving Dadasahib Phalke award in the year 2004. It is the greatest award which is given to the best contributor to Indian cinema. Adoor also tasted the fruit of Padmashree in 1984 and Padmavibhushan in 2006. He got several times the best director awards from state and central governments. His films were appreciated as the best feature film award many times. Other than this Adoor Gopalkrishnan won prizes in many International film festivals. British film institute award, FIPRESCI prize, Sutherland trophy were the few awards won by Adoor films.
