Thrissur pooram is the biggest pooram that held in our state Kerala. It is popularly known as Pooram of all Poorams (Festivals).This pooram is conducted in every year at the month of Medam based on the Malayalam calendar. This is approximately month of April or May in English calendar. The main centre of this Pooram is held at Vadakkumnathan temple, near the famous Thekkinkadu maithan( ground). This pooram is a continuous 36 hours of program, which attracted many people all over the country and the international tourists. Peoples are like to came to Thrissur for watching the Thrissur pooram. The main attraction of this pooram is that it contains more than 50 elephants are decorated by Nettipatam, and also the Kudamattam. There are so many small poorams that are grouped in Thekkinkadu maithan. at the Pooram day. Paramekkavu and the Thiruvambadi are the two groups that involved as major part in the Pooram. Thrissur pooram is started before 200 years on the ruling of the great emperor Shakthan Thampuran. He made unifying of small temples near the Vadakkumnathan temple and treated as a single mass festival. He made these temples in two groups; they are western group and eastern group. In this western group is popularly known as Thiruvambadi, and the eastern group popularly known as Paramekkavu. Thiruvambadi consists of Kanimangalam, Laloor, Ayyanthole, Nethilakkavu and the Thiruvambady temple. They display these umbrellas by sitting in the Elephant. The elephants are decorated with Nettipattam. This is really a fascinating show for the eye. This is the other attraction in Thrissur pooram festival. This is really a good attraction for both eye and ear. The contest is mainly between the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi groups. This is also another attraction of Thrissur pooram festival. Panjavadyam means the artistic display using five music instruments. This is a good hearing for the year. In 2012 Thrissur pooram held on May1. The function of Madathil varavu will commenced on 11 am of May 1. And also Elanjitharamelam is on 2.30 pm on the same day. The most beautiful show of kudamattam will be held on 5.30 pm at Royal darbar on the same day of the pooram. Fire works will be conducted on May 2 at 3.00 am.
