The first Prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru,visited in Alappuzha in 1952.He was thrilled and excited in the huge snake-boats race.On his return to Delhi,Jawaharlal Nehru donated a rolling trophy to be awarded to the winner of the race.This trophy later known as Nehru Trophy.The Nehru trophy boat race conducted on the second Saturday of August every year and is a major tourist attraction.
The most spectacular event of the boat race is the race of Chundan Vallams (Snake Boats).Other types boats are participate in various events of the race are Churulan vallam,Odi Vallam,Vaipu Vallam,Kochu Vallam etc.
