Onam Celebrations in 10 days - Malayali Festival

Onam festival will celebrate in the Malayalam month of Chingam (i.e., August–September). Malayalees will celebrate this ten-day with their community cultural presentation, music and dancing events. Onam festival begins with Atham / Attam. The celebration starts with making pookalam from this day called as 'Onapookkalam' or 'Athapoo'. The highlight of Atham is that people start making pookalam from this day. Only yellow flowers will be used on this day. The second day starts with people go to temple at early morning. Thereafter they add new flowers to pookalam design which was laid during the first day. Everybody wishes to invite Lord Maveli in their own house by making the best Pookalam in the neighbourhood.
The day is marked by buzz and lot of activities starting from pookalam to shopping. People will shop new clothes for the great day Onam and buy some gifts for the loved one. Vishakam is considered to be one of the most propitious days of Onam. Markets are very busy on this day. Women are busy with kitchen in making of pickels, pappad and sweets.
Anizham is one of the most important days in the Onam days as it starts the grand Snake Boat Race event called Vallamkali. Boats are oared on the rhythm of vanchipattu or boat songs. From this day onwards and people starts to their native homes to celebrate the onam festivity along with their family ones. The pookalam design will be very large by this time.
Most of the temples offer special sadhyas on from this day.
Festivities include 'Puli Kali' (Masked leopard dance) and traditional dance forms like 'Kaikotti Kali' also performed in various functions. The day marks off with a major traditional formal procedure where the small statues of Mahabali and Vamana will be washed and taken around the house. It will be later placed in the center of the pookalam. From this day onwards, the statue will be called Onathappan.
Uthradom is the ninth day Onam. Uthradom is also known as onam (first Onam). The farmers bring produce of their farms for household and they are greeted and treated with sweets by eldest member of the family. The Tenth and the important day of Onam is Thiruvonam also known as Rendam Onam (Second Onam). People wake up in early morning and take oil bath. Special prayers are organized in each house.
