This Government Museum, located in the capital city of Kerala, was founded in the year 1857, with a spacious park and a zoological garden located right inside the campus.
About the Government Museum The collection at the Government Museum covers all the aspects about the rich and colourful heritage of Kerala. Kerala has had a unique style of architecture and craftsmanship especially of stone, wood and bronze sculptures as well as in the visual and performing arts sections.
Galleries in the Givernment Museum Bronze Gallery of the museum displays the unique and special characteristics of the carvings which are different from the ones in Tamil Nadu even though they were of the same period. The carvings of Kerala are stockier and shorter, with squarish jaws sharp eyes and nose. They tended to be more ornate with jewellary and clothing than the Tamil Nadu Bronze carvings of that period. 9th century piece of Vishnu Srinivasa is supposed to be the oldest one. The later pieces of Nataraja and other devis and deities follow the same pattern of ornamentation.
In the wood gallery you can find wooden beams, pillars, brackets and some more of the other interesting features of the temple architecture. You can also see richly carved wooden chariots that were used for temple processions in those days. to carry the deity.
