Thangasseri Beach is located in a beautiful seaside village, at about 5 kilometers from the city of Kollam which is also known by its anglicized name of Quilon.
About Kollam / Quilon Kollam was known as a Dutch Quilon in the earlier days, as it was once a British enclave. Thangasseri means Gold Village in the lacal malayalam language and was one of the most flourishing trade hubs of those days where Gold was the currency used.
Places to visit in Thangasseri There is a famous fort as well as churches in Thangasseri built by the Portuguese in the 18th century. There is a 3 kilometer long beautiful beach in Thangasseri. There is a light house about 144 ft tall, constructed in 1519 by the British. The light house is open to visitors from 1530 - 1730 hrs. This light house has been constructed to warn the sailors of the treacherous reefs in the area. Thangasseri was the favourite settlement of the Portuguese at first, then taken over by Dutch and the British followed, since the area is known for the International Cashew trade on the Malabar Coast.
How to Reach Thangasseri: Thiruvananthapuram at 71 kilometers from Kollam, is the nearest International airport. You can get hired vehicles , transport buses and railway trains to Kollam from there. Kollam is very well connected with rest of Kerala and India by rail and road transport. Tamilnadu is connected with Kollam through Metergauge trains via Shenkottah and Punalur sections. It is also connectd with the main railway line running through Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala has a well maintained road transport with regular buses plying from one end to the other. Since Thangasseri is just 5 kilometers away from Kollam you can get autos and taxis as well as transport buses to reach the beach.
