Peermedu Peermedu is a small beautiful plantation town in Idukki district. This hill station is popularly known as the ' Kerala's own Ooty'. The tea plantations along with wide varieties of spices make this hill station one of the tourist destination in South India. This idyllic hill station got it's name from a Sufi saint called Peer Muhammed. 'Medu' in the local language, Malayalam, means hill and thus Peermedu means 'the hill of the Peer. This place was once used as the summer retreat of the Travancore Kings. This pleasant hill station is situated at a height of 915m above sea level and apart from the vegetation, the place also provides excellent trekking spots, waterfalls and other scenic beauties in the lap of the nature. This pleasant place is an en route to Periyar wildlife reserve. Best time to visit : April-June and September-November.
HOW TO REACH PEERMEDU Peermedu is just 40km from Kumuli town in Idukki district,85 km from Kottayam district. For the foreignere, the airport is available only at a distance of 105km:Kochin International Airport. You can also use railway for transportation. The nearest railway station is Kottayam railway station. The railway station is 85km from Peemedu. Peermedu is well connected by means of roads other cities of Kerala as well as number of neighboring towns in Tamil Nadu.
WHAT TO SEE IN PEERMEDU Situated at the high altitude, Peermedu offers you an excellent view of the rich natural beauty. This place is known for it's eco tourism. The nice fragrance of the spices, sprawling plantations, tea gardens, coffee plantations, rubber and eucalypts lying side by side make this place an attractive one. A nature walk through the hills is quite rejuvenating and exhilarating one. The place is blessed with waterfalls like Meloram, Nallathanni, Panchalimedu and Valanjamkanam. It also offers opportunities of trekking for those who are very adventurous. Kalthotti, Vagamon, Karandakapara, Grampi, Paranthupara and Memala are the main hills providing excellent trekking routes. If you want to know Kerala's own Ayurveda, there is an excellent Ayurvedic centre, Sahyadri Ayurvedic Centre, in Peermedu. A drug museum with more than 200 varieties of spices and herbs is situated close to the Ayurvedic centre. The lovely Thrishanku hills is only 4km from Peermedu. But while you are planning a trip, it is better to have a trip including Periyar National Park and Peermedu.
ACCOMMODATIONS IN PEERMEDU There are many accommodation facilities available in Peermedu. The Summer Residence, is an excellent one. It is now converted into Government Guest House under the Department of Kerala Tourism. Apart from the Guest House, there lodges available near Peermedu are also in good conditions.
